Another Day Of Infamy

To The Reader’s Forum: Watching the news today, Jan. 6, 2021, and witnessing the violent attempt to overturn the election, I am reminded of the words of President Franklin Roosevelt, when speaking about the attack on Pearl Harbor, “this is a day that will live in infamy.” The horrifying difference being that this time we were attacked, not by a foreign enemy, but by a horde of domestic terrorists, spurred on by the President of our country, Donald Trump. In my lifetime, there have been a number of national tragedies, but never did I think we would come to this in the United ...

Remove President Trump

To The Reader’s Forum: To the Reader’s Forum: I rely on your newspaper so much to inform me of the day’s and community ‘s happenings. But some news gets beyond my comprehension. This is especially true considering Donald Trump. When it was reported that he said that both sides of the Charlottesville demonstration contained “good people”, I was sort of stunned. How could outright bigots and white supremist be considered “good people”? One of the foundational principles of my faith is to confirm the basic integrity and worth of every individual. But these ...

Concerns Expressed About City Council Meetings

To The Reader’s Forum: I have been watching City Council meetings more than a few times in 2020. I would like to recap a few concerns I have seen at these meetings. The amount of time wasted is astounding. For example, three months talking about where to put ONE food cart. It was an endless, blathering discussion. Maddening to listen to. There is very little productive proactive thinking. It’s reactive. New ideas are not easily welcomed. I don’t hear them talking about creating jobs, expanding the tax base, or poverty in the City. There was a vote just this month on an ...

This Is Not The Time For Rep. Tom Reed, GOP To Be Polite

To The Reader’s Forum: It is time for Tom Reed (and other lawmakers) to understand that there are times to be “polite” and times to do what is right. Mr. Reed appears to have thus far preferred being “polite” to the Washington establishment who prefer a purportedly “peaceful” transition of power rather than a thorough investigation into the thousands of affidavits alleging voter fraud in closely contested races conducted in swing states. He says on one hand that he continues “to support the president,” but on the other, that “[he] recognize[s] that…we do ...

Community Shows Generosity, Support

To The Reader’s Forum: I am overwhelmed by the unconditional generosity and support of our community. Like many organizations on the front-lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Susan Center is encouraged by the outpouring of concern, messages of gratitude, words of encouragement and acts of generosity. For us, these powerful affirmations has a direct correlation to our mission of serving a meal to anyone in need. So much has changed in the last year – the world we live in, our community, and places we work and call home. But now, more than ever, nothing is more important than ...

Readers’ Forum

Don’t Miss The Message For The Buzz To The Reader’s Forum: There’s a buzz going around over the rare appearance of the “Bethlehem star” in the night sky since December 21. Whether or not it was Jupiter and Saturn in brilliant alignment over Bethlehem during the days of Jesus’ birth is unknown, but that star, whatever it was, indicated a greater phenomena than a spectacular astrological rarity. The mystery traces back long ago to the arduous journey through the wilderness by the Israelites when a messianic prophecy about one in their midst would be the metaphorical star ...
