Bridge To Be Closed Friday

LEON – The Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works will close Leon Bridge No. 18 on County Road 5 – Mosher Hollow Road – one quarter-mile north of Kendall Corners in Leon on Friday for approximately four months. An off-site detour will be posted.

Kennedy Grange To Meet Friday

KENNEDY – Kennedy Grange 496 will meet Friday at 7 p.m. in the Clarks Corners Community Church. The Randolph Central School chapter of FFA and grangers from around the county will be guests at the meeting. The grange previously met April 4 at the church. The grangers each brought snack items, which filled two mailing boxes. Easter cards were also enclosed to be given to the Blue Star Mothers, who mailed the boxes to our troops to thank them for their service. It was also reported that Donna Cross made 23 tiny hats for newborns as a community service project.

Thule Lodge To Begin Friday Meals

BEMUS POINT – The Thule Lodge, located at 4123 Pancake Hill Road, will begin the season of Friday night dinners this Friday from 5-7 p.m. The main menu will include a fish dinner, with a second choice meal being a Swedish combination of korv, kaldolmars and Swedish meatballs. All dinners are open to everyone. Thule Lodge is in its 107th year of preserving the Swedish heritage through events and activities. New members are always welcome.

GERRY – The Gerry United Methodist Church, corner of Route 60 and Church St., Gerry, will hold a rummage and bake sale on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a bag sale beginning at noon. Annual Craft Bazaar Set

FINDLEY LAKE – The Alexander Findley Library, Findley Lake, will hold its annual spring craft bazaar and will be held on Saturday in the Findley Lake Fire Hall, Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Handmade craft items will be displayed in both the fire hall and the Water Wheel Building. A bake sale, Chinese auction with prizes donated by participating crafters and door prizes will also be featured. The kitchen will offer a homemade menu throughout the day. Allen Cemetery Meeting Set

POLAND – The Allen Cemetery on Willard Street Extension in the Town of Poland will hold their annual meeting on May 5 in the home of Chuck Ames, 1681 Willard St. Ext., at 7 p.m. All lot owners are invited and welcome to attend. This year’s Memorial Day service will be held Sunday, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. at the cemetery and the speaker will be David E. Krieg, Mayor of Falconer and retired Undersheriff of Chautauqua County. Test Preparation Course To Be Held

Are You Prepared For The Biology Regents? – an interactive online test preparation course, will be offered by Jamestown Community College from May 7 through June 6. The registration fee is $59. Library Offering Children’s Program

Beginning in May, Findley Lake Library’s new children’s program will be meeting from 6-7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month. This program will offer a variety of activities including science experiments and arts and crafts. At the start of each session, attendees will read a book which the following activities will be inspired by. Library representatives would like to encourage creativity through reading and to show kids that books are an excellent jumping off-point for cultivating new interests. The hope is that this program will be dynamic and as helpful a community resource as possible, therefore all input regarding it is both encouraged and appreciated.

Viking Work Party Sunday

Viking Chief Mindy Worden has announced that a work party has been scheduled for Sunday at the Viking Lake Park facility. The work session will begin at 8 a.m. and volunteers are asked to bring rakes for outside clean-up and buckets for cleaning inside. A “thank you” breakfast will be served when the work is done. Worden has expressed a need for a good turnout so the Lake Park will be ready for a busy summer.

Weiss To Hold Book Signing

Harold J. Weiss Jr. will sign copies of his new book, “Tracking the Texas Rangers, the Twentieth Century,” from noon-2 p.m. on Monday, in Hultquist Library on Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus. Weiss, a retired JCC history, government, and criminal justice professor, also published the acclaimed biography, “Yours to Command: The Life and Legend of Texas Ranger Captain Bill McDonald.” The Hultquist Library collection contains both books by Weiss. Weiss is co-editor of a two-volume anthology on the endeavors of the Texas Rangers in the 19th and 20th centuries. His articles on the Texas Rangers have been published in numerous state and national journals. He was recently named a Texas Ranger Laureate to help plan the bicentennial celebration of the Texas Rangers. Weiss earned a doctoral degree in history at Indiana University at Bloomington.

Music Camp Deadline Nears

CHAUTAUQUA – The Chautauqua Music Camps announces April 30 as the deadline for application to the newly created Chamber Music Camp. This branch of the music camps is open to high school age wind players interested in an intensive chamber music (small group) music experience. Theta Beta Holds Meeting

Theta Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met recently in the home of Deanna Sands in Sherman, co-hosted by Inta Damcott. Nancy Palmer presided. A program on the difference of normal fears and serious phobias was given. New officers were elected following the program. Discussion was on the Easter egg hunt in the Sherman Fire Hall and the collection of household items for the Agnes Home. Refreshments were served.

Festival Of PRIDE Friday

The YWCA Racial Justice committee is sponsoring the second annual Festival of PRIDE (Promoting Respect for Individual Differences for Everyone) Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the YWCA, 401 N. AAUW To Host Workshop

School To Hold Awareness Night

TIDIOUTE – On Tuesday, the Tidioute Community Charter School’s SADD group is hosting their third annual Drug Awareness Night. The topic will be “Signs and Symptoms: That Someone You Know is Using Or Abusing Drugs.” It will begin at 6 p.m., and will feature local law enforcement and local residents who have been affected by drugs and/or drug use. The event will be taking place in the gymnasium of the school. There will be pizza, drinks, popcorn and dessert items. Proceeds will support TCCS’s SADD group. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of permanent disability, with 80 percent of stroke victims having no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke. Preventive ultrasound screenings can help people avoid a stroke. Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. Virginia Lind and Allie Withers will host the Thursday Westside Women’s Club meeting in the Marvin House. Twenty-three members and one guest attended a recent meeting in Bethel Lutheran Church. St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is having its final $2 bag sale this week before closing for Holy Week and to restock with spring clothing. The Fenton History Center is partnering with Jamestown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education to present a short series of lectures about early Chautauqua County history. Fenton History Center special programming coordinator Frances Fair will introduce a series of three topics starting April 23 through May 7. Presenters over the three weeks will speak about the War of 1812 in Chautauqua County, transportation, commerce and early settlement in the County. A recently discovered 1814 map will be viewed during the second week. The final week will cover the life of early settler Nathan Brown, a Frewsburg girl’s adventure and other settlers’ stories. The classes are on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. at the JCC campus. The cost is $59, and one can register by calling 338-1005.

Children’s Chorale To Perform

FREDONIA – The Chautauqua Children’s Chorale almost Spring Concert, originally scheduled for March 16, has been postponed. The concert will take place on Monday, at the Fredonia Methodist Church and will start at 7 p.m. It will feature both Junior and Concert Chorale groups. These singers range in age from 9 to 18 and come from all corners of Chautauqua County. Admission is free, but a freewill donation will be collected to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Infant Swim Classes To Begin

The Winifred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls of Jamestown is currently registering participants for Infant-Toddler Swim classes. Classes are for children six months to 5 years of age. The next eight-week session begins on Monday and will run Mondays through June 9. There will be no classes during spring break (April 14) or Memorial Day (May 26). The cost for the Infant Toddler Swim class is $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. The program is designed for children under 5 and they must have an adult swim with them. Easter Party

Set For Sunday

The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary will host the annual children’s Easter party on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. Squadron 1280 will cook hot dogs. Cookie and candy donations for the event are needed and should be dropped off at the post by Saturday. For more information, call 595-3145.

Lawn Mowing Bids Requested

PORTLAND – The Evergreen Cemetery Association board of trustees is seeking bids for provision of lawn mowing for the 2014 season. Interested parties may obtain a bid proposal application by contacting Betty Ridout, association secretary, at 962-2309 or at various sites where announcements are posted. Deadline for bid proposals is April 21.

Easter Egg Hunt Set For April 12

On Saturday, April 12, Raymour & Flanigan will hold an Easter egg hunt in the showroom beginning at 11 a.m. A coloring contest for ages 2-12 will be held with judging to take place at the close of business. Children do not need to be present to win. A drawing will be held for a giant Easter surprise. Free pictures with the Easter Bunny will also be taken. Participants are asked to pick up coloring pages at Raymour & Flanigan before the date, or color in store on April 12. Pancake Breakfast Set For Saturday

FALCONER – A pancake breakfast will be held Saturday at the Falcons Nest Banquet Hall on Main Street in Falconer to benefit Al’s Warriors for Relay for Life. It will be held from 8-11 a.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children. It’s an all you can eat pancake breakfast.

Frewsburg Can Drive Is Saturday

FREWSBURG – The Frewsburg girls softball team will hold a can drive in Frewsburg on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The team will be going door to door through the neighborhoods collecting cans. Cans can be dropped off at the high school entrance between those times.

Bluegrass Jam Set For Thursday

LAKEWOOD – Lakewood Legion Post 1286 will host a Bluegrass Jam on Thursday from 7-10 p.m. The kitchen will be open with specials and snack menu from 6-9. On Sunday, there will be a herring breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other breakfast choices will be available. Chicken and biscuits and snack menu will be available from 1-7 p.m. Music will be provided by Gina V and Barry, from 4-8 p.m. All members and guests are welcome, please sign in.

Outdoor Club To Meet Thursday

WARREN, Pa. – On Thursday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will hold its quarterly planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church at 109 W. Third Ave. in Warren. Pancake Meal Set For Saturday

Westfield Seniors To Dine April 10

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Senior Citizens will meet for dinner on Thursday, April 10, in the YWCA. Dinner will be provided by the Westfield Women’s Organization. Sharon Ackendorf will speak on the internal workings and daily servings at the soup kitchen. The seniors met recently for lunch provided by the Westfield Union Relief. Martha Bills discussed dredging at the Barcelona Harbor and plans for the pier. Shirley Kolpien presided. Reports by the secretary and treasurer were read. Members attending received copies of updated bylaws. Celebrating birthdays were Jean Stebell, Enid Beadle and Kolpien. New members, age 59 and over, are welcome to attend meetings. Set For April 12

Pasta Night with fresh homemade Italian sauces will be featured at a special dinner at the Elks Club, 379 E. Fourth St. on Saturday, April 12, at 5 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $12 per adult and $6 per child under 12 with the proceeds being donated to establish an Elks scholarship honoring the memory of longtime Elks member, Gino Micciche.
