Lamenting Why Area Residents Are Unhappy Misses Chance For A Happier Future

To The Reader’s Forum: “Why are Americans Not Happy?) (Larson, July 29/30, 2023) offers evidence for an unsubstantiated claim. The judge has a litany of reasons from religious participation to cable TV. Many highly religious countries are terrifying and many irreligious ones quite content. Cable? Most folks get news from sources other than cable news. Except old folks. If folks in Jamestown are unhappy, the outrageously poor school system, the high-poverty rate and declining population should suffice. It is a long common lament of old folks, that the world is changing for ...

Op-Ed Writer Captures The Charm Of Print Newspaper

To the Readers’ Forum: The Post-Journal may be overwhelmed with requests for copies of the Saturday-Sunday newspaper (July 1-2, 2023). Gerald E. Scorse wrote so beautifully regarding the nearly “old way”of reading the newspaper. Some of us exposed to the “new way” of grabbing a “squawk-box” to get correspondence wonder how can it be pleasant and can it always be accurate? And - enjoyable. It all seems so tense. I know, I know, this old woman may just be dense, but Mr. and Mrs. Scorse clearly enjoy the “old” way. Thank you for reading this. Mayville

Can County Afford The Pay Raises It Is Approving?

To The Reader’s Forum: I am really so very happy for the labor leaders of Chautauqua County who have negotiated a huge payday increase over the next four years for our county rank and file unionized workers. As for County Executive PJ Wendel who continues to freely give away the taxpayer dollars, I just shake my head. I do appreciate that PJ does not come from a history of managing and obviously does yet understand his role to protect the taxpayers. But soon one or more county departments will be fully back on the local tax share, the housing market and tax assessments will be ...

America Deserves Sensible Gun Legislation

To the Readers’ Forum: “There’s nothing more we can do.” The above comment can be credited to John Cornryn, Republican senator from Texas. Cornryn made that comment following the gun deaths of three school children and three adults in Nashville recently. Cornryn and fellow Republican Senator Ted Cruz feel that the GOP can do nothing more to keep our children safe from gun violence. In other words, their hands are tied. That may be true — both Cornryn and Cruz have accepted over $400,000 from the NRA while opposing attempt to address out-of-control gun deaths. These gun ...

Partnerships Vital To Cummins’ Start

To The Reader’s Forum: Cummins Engine Co. recently announced a major new investment at their Jamestown Engine Plant. It’s been nearly 40 years since we all became aware of Cummins and their potential of achieving the status of a great local company. The initial attraction and the retention of Cummins has a litany of stories around both challenges to locating and then keeping them in the 1,000,000 square foot plant in the town of Busti. One of those stories centers around a business requirement for a municipal water supply rather than the well field then serving Cummins. With ...

There Are Many Reasons For United Methodist Split

To The Reader’s Forum: Jeff Winton’s article “Disappointed with Disaffiliation” sadly misrepresents the true reason for several churches in Chautauqua County leaving the United Methodist Church. The LGBTQ+ is not the main reason for disaffiliation. These churches are not “opposed to the teaching of Jesus.” Everyone is welcomed in their churches. They may not fly flags and paint their entrance with a rainbow, but it doesn’t mean all people are not welcome. The true issue for disaffiliation is because they believe the Bible is the Word of God and it hasn’t changed. ...
