Thank You To Those Who Have Secured City’s Baseball Legacy

To The Reader’s Forum: I want to praise the work of people like Russ Diethrick, Sam Teresi, Marie Carruba, Kim Ecklund, Greg Peterson, and others to whom this community owes a debt of gratitude for securing the legacy of baseball in Jamestown. It is an honor for Jamestown Community College to be involved in the maintenance and transformation of the Stadium that has served as a cornerstone of this community for generations. Sincerely, Daniel DeMarte Jamestown Community College president

Rodeos Serve No Useful Purpose

To The Reader’s Forum: If people taking part in or attending an event — a rodeo — that glorifies animals being spurred, roped, slammed to the ground, being strapped with bucking straps, or their necks violently twisted is something to be celebrated, I think it is time to give pause. Actually, it is sick and depraved, in my opinion, much like the gladiator events in ancient Rome. Maybe it is time to think about what goes on behind the scenes, too, as if what is happening before the audience’s very own eyes shouldn’t be enough. Veterinarians have testified to the terrible ...

Small Town Values Under Attack

To The Reader’s Forum: If a violent mob was attempting to burn your neighbors house down would you stop them? If they sucker punched somebody on a sidewalk or attempted to car jack an old lady would you step in? If you reside in a small town the answer is a simple one, of course you would without hesitation. Small towns are populated with folks who went to grade school together, they tend to look out for each other. Doing nothing and hoping the cops get there before somebody gets killed is simply not in their DNA. This fact was driven home in a recent Jason Aldean song called, ...

Get On Board With Proposed Code Violation Tickets

To The Reader’s Forum: Come on Jamestown. In response to The Post-Journal’s recent editorial concerning the Department of Development’s new Code Violation laws, I offer the following thoughts. I am definitely in favor of the new law that a Code enforcement officer is able issue fines to residents that do not comply with the regulations of the City Code. Jamestown has laws concerning upkeep of properties. Enforcing these laws is a long process. People who receive violations ignore them. Letters are sent giving time for compliance. If the violation is not taken care of, a court ...

To The Reader’s Forum: You can tell when the facts presented in the latest indictment of Donald Trump resonate with reality among his supporters. For example, Julie Kelly, a Trump apologist on Twitter simply wrote, “Btw this indictment is poorly written and nothing more than a rehash of the J6 select committee.” In other words, she does not disagree with either the facts in the indictment or the findings of the “J6 select committee”. Her tweet is a reflection of the reality of what led up to and what happened on January 6, 2021. I can understand her desire to reject ...

Recent Article Captured The Importance Of Volunteering

To the Reader’s Forum: Thank you for sharing the recent article titled ‘New to Volunteering’. This article captured the importance of volunteering in a way that I had never thought of before. Volunteering (and even working for) a nonprofit really does remind you about what true democracy is. It requires you to listen to many voices, incorporate a variety of thoughts and ideas, put the greater goal first above your own personal priorities. I serve as the executive director at the Audubon Community Nature Center where we have a variety of committees who meet to discuss ...
