Readers Forum: Safety Standards Needed For E-Bikes, E-Scooters

To The Reader’s Forum:

I have paid attention lately to the huge influx of bikes, scooters, and similar methods of transportation.

What amazes me is that nobody has been killed while riding one of these conveyances! Tonight at the corner of Fairmount and McDaniel, three young men, not little kids, came across McDaniel against the signal, paying no attention to the six or seven cars waiting to turn onto Fairmount. These lucky kids didn’t get hit! My congrats and thanks to the observant drivers!

My point is that there were no helmets, nothing but attitude on the part of the riders, and obviously a distinct lack of good, old-fashioned brains. Adults are riding electric bikes like they’re motorcycles, but not subject to bikers rules. again where are the brains? I’ve seen adults carrying 2- and 3-year-old riders, no seat or helmet! Why?

I plead with legislators, police and people selling these conveyances to work at instilling safety into these people.

Maybe the days of brains are passe, but I don’t want to be a witness to an accident where somebody becomes a statistic of poor judgment! Young people, you are the future, not someone to attend a friend’s funeral. Work on brains y’all, you may realize how handy they are when you become old like I am!
