Cardboard Boat Event Cancelled

The Cardboard Boat Regatta scheduled for Saturday has been canceled. Arts Council For Chautauqua County and Reg Lenna Civic Center did not receive enough registrations to go through with the event as planned. Questions may be directed to 664-2465, ext. 227.

Thrift Shop Is Stocked Well

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St. between East Fourth and East Fifth streets, Jamestown, is well-stocked with summer clothing for men, women and children as well as small household items and jewelry. Off-street parking is available in the church lot off East Fifth Street. Summer hours for sales and receiving are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Tuesday, receiving hours are 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds are used for local outreach. The all-volunteer local staff includes many from RSVP.

Thrift Store Is Accepting Items

The Community Outreach Center Thrift Store, First Lutheran Church, third floor, corner of Chandler and Center streets, is currently accepting donations of gently used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and also household goods. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Every child will receive a free stuffed toy. All proceeds will benefit local charities.

Block Sale Event Set For Weekend

Park West held their July neighborhood meeting outdoors in Veterans Park. Co-presidents Stephanie Wright and Kimberly Lombard announced the continuation of the “Every-Odd-Year Wild Westside Block Sale.” This sale takes place in August of each odd year promoting interaction and communications among neighbors. Debbie Basile, chairperson for the event, says to expect even more households to participate this year. Refreshments will be available. The sale is on the west side of Jamestown and will include parts of McDaniel, Fairmount, Harding, Hallock, Fullerton, Todd, Woodworth and Royal. The sale runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Town Picnic Parade Is Saturday

Route 76 Work To Begin Today

SHERMAN – The New York State Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin highway paving today on Route 76, in the town of Sherman. As a result, motorists should expect to encounter daily lane closures, between Route 474 and the village of Sherman, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Traffic will alternate the use of one lane controlled by flaggers in the vicinity of the work zone. This project is expected to last approximately two weeks. This work is weather dependent and will be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

Celoron-W.E. Seniors To Meet

Celoron-West Ellicott Seniors will meet for a chicken barbecue at noon on Aug. 21 in the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club pavilion. The cost is $8 per person. Party Caucus To Meet Thursday

Outhouse Race Set For Sept. 14

SINCLAIRVILLE – The Valley Historical Society in Sinclairville will be holding its second annual Outhouse Race in conjunction with the Sinclairville History Fair on Sept. 14. The society is looking for persons willing to put together a racing team and build an outhouse to race in this year’s event. Last year’s Outhouse Race drew the largest crowd of the day at the History Fair. Arts Council Workshop Set

Arts Council For Chautauqua County and Willow Bay Theater present a Stage Combat Workshop on Saturday at 11 a.m. The workshop is aimed at actors and actresses in their teens through adulthood. SUNY Fredonia’s Steve Vaughan offers an introduction to stage combat. This workshop will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and theories of stage combat. This is a non-armed workshop. Please wear loose clothing and be prepared to move. Vaughan has been teaching stage combat for over 35 years. He is certified by the Society Of American Fight Directors. Art In The Park Is This Weekend

MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Society of Artists will once again be holding their annual art show/sale “Art in the Park” at Mayville’s Lakeside Park on Saturday and Sunday. Program To Begin Airing Saturday

“Dialogues” is the name of a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from SUNY Fredonia. Hosted by Tina Zboch, the program will feature guest Dr. Virginia Horvath. Horvath is president of SUNY Fredonia. Some of the topics include reflections of her first year as president as well as plans for the future. The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 2. Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.

Maple Grove Reunion Planned

Boil Order Lifted In Frewsburg

FREWSBURG – The boil water order in effect since Thursday for customers served by the Frewsburg public water supply in the Wigren Road area is now lifted. The water leak that caused the problem was repaired Friday, and water samples collected Monday and Tuesday show the water is safe to drink.

The East Hill Foundation is accepting grant applications from nonprofit, 501(c)3 organizations that serve the Western New York area. The application deadline is Thursday, Aug. 1. The foundation is interested in helping nonprofit organizations that provide basic human services such as providing food and shelter for the needy. The grant application is available at www.easthillfdn.org. The East Hill Foundation is a privately-funded family foundation founded in 1986. Friday At Fair

Chautauqua County 4-H will be holding its 49th annual 4-H Market Animal Sale on Friday at noon at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds. Approximately 45 steers, eight meat goats, 12 sets of chickens, 40 lambs and 80 hogs will be auctioned off. 4-H is the youth development program of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

CWC Annual Meeting Set

MAYVILLE – Webb’s Captains Table will be the location for the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy’s annual meeting and dinner celebration to be held Sunday. This year’s featured speakers will be CWC’s conservationists Jane Conroe and David Anderson, speaking on their outreach to foster lakeshore native plant landscaping on Chautauqua Lake and to engage landowners of stream sites with high rates of erosion to obtain design and funding assistance to undertake conservation projects to reduce the loading of sediment and nutrients to Chautauqua Lake. CWC members, community leaders, and the general public are invited to attend the annual meeting at a cost of $40 per person for a buffet style dinner. AOC To Ride Bikes Wednesday

On Wednesday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will ride bikes at Goddard State Park and in Meadville. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. at the Youngsville Home and Garden Center, 70 Railroad St., Youngsville or at the parking lot below the Goddard State Park Office on Lake Wilhelm Road, across from Pier 3 Boat Launch, at 9:30 a.m. The ride will be 16 miles around Lake Wilhelm on a paved trail. Riders will then load their bikes on their vehicles, stop for lunch, then drive to the Ernst Trail in Meadville on Route 322 next to Home Depot for a 10-mile ride. Pet Celebration Set For Tuesday

LILY DALE – The second annual Lily Dale Pet Remembrance Celebration opens at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lily Dale Pet Cemetery. The Rev. Joanne Copley-Nigro, founder of the event, invites pets and their human companions to take part in a brief program of music and prayer. Pets will be blessed, and animals that have passed on will be remembered and honored. The cemetery, located off East Street on the path to the Inspiration Stump, was established in 1900, and is believed to be one of the oldest municipal pet cemeteries in the country. Former companions of animals that have passed but are not buried in the cemetery, may bring a photograph, or share a story or prayer during the service. Also, a pebble or flower may in left at the cemetery in memory of pets.

Civil War Talk

The Cattaraugus County Museum’s summer-long Civil War Event Series continues on Wednesday as Allegany County Historian Craig Braack will give a talk entitled “Gettysburg: The High Water Mark of the Confederacy.” A graduate of SUNY Geneseo, Braack has been historian of Allegany County since 1985. The talk will take place at 7 p.m. at the Cattaraugus County Museum and will take place rain or shine. If weather permits, it will be held outdoors on the museum lawn. Outreach Program To Begin This Week

WESTFIELD – The Lakeshore Assembly of God Church, 252 E. Vendor Spaces Still Available

The City of Jamestown Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department has announced that there are still spaces available for food concessionaires interested in having a spot reserved at the 2013 Labor Day Festival. The 34th Annual Labor Day Festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Bergman Park. All concessionaires are required to sell unique items, with the exception of pop and water. History Of Dances Set For Saturday

The history of dances and dance halls in Allegany State Park 1933-1973 will be discussed by speaker Bob Byledbal on Saturday at 1 p.m. The event will be held at Camp Allegany, Red House Area, Allegany State Park. 4-H To Present Projects Thursday

Chautauqua County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Program has a variety of exhibits attend The Chautauqua county fair each year. This week Chautauqua County 4-H members are preparing for the 2013 county fair to present over 700 animals, 1,600 non-animal projects and to compete in several knowledge skills contests. 4-H provides a variety of youth development opportunities. One popular project is the food and nutrition program. On Thursday, youth will present 174 food projects to volunteer judges, hoping to receive the coveted Special Judges Award in the Foods Category. Seat Check Set For Thursday

The Jamestown Police Department will conduct a child safety seat checkpoint Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Chautauqua Opportunities Inc., 402 Chandler St. The safety check is in conjunction with the Chautauqua Childcare Council. Citizens are encouraged to participate in the free checkpoint where officers will inspect child safety seats and offer advice on proper installation. Heritage House Camp Planned

Cemetery Tour Set For July 16

Lake View Cemetery will offer a walking tour entitled, “What’s in a Name?” on Tuesday, July 16 starting at 6 p.m. at the cemetery office at the corner of Buffalo Street and Lakeview Avenue. SHERMAN – Sherman First Baptist Church will host vacation Bible school from 6-8 p.m. Monday through Friday. The weeklong event will include a daily Bible story and verse, game time, refreshments and craft time. Church volunteers have spent much time preparing and decorating according to the theme.

BPU Office Closed Today

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities Customer Service Office and other administrative offices will be closed today, in observance of Independence Day. The Yard Waste Site will be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as usual. There will be no garbage pickup today. Residents whose garbage normally is picked up on Thursday should place their garbage and recyclables at the curb after 6 p.m. today for pickup Friday. BPU Customer Service will reopen for business at 7 a.m. on Friday. For reports of trouble in all BPU Divisions, all hours, customers may call 661-1640.

ASHVILLE – The Western NY Food Express Truck out of Buffalo will be at the Ashville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, from noon-1:30 p.m. and reopens from 3:30-5 p.m. There is no charge for the fresh produce or other items that will be available. Thrift Store To Close This Week

St. James Thrift Store, 141 Institute St., Jamestown, will be closed this week for the holiday. The store will reopen Wednesday, July 10. Hours are Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. RSVP volunteers will be on hand to help customers. Price remains $2 per bag. Proceeds are used to help those in need.

Zoning Board To Meet Wednesday

RANDOLPH – The Town of Randolph Zoning Board of Appeals will meet in the Randolph Municipal building Wednesday at 7 p.m. to hear a request for a special-use permit from Randolph Business Partners to construct a 6-foot-high fence at 1 Bank St.

Prayer Service Set For Fourth Of July

KIANTONE – The Prayer for America service will be held on July 4 at 7 p.m. at the Kiantone Congregational Church. The service will include the giving of thanks to God for the liberties and blessings he has provided. There will be prayers of intercession for the nation to heed the voice of God and turn from ways displeasing to him. All are welcome to come.

SWCS Class Of ’73 To Reunite

The Southwestern Central School class of 1973 has scheduled its 40th class reunion to be held at Shaggy’s See-Zurh House in Bemus Point, the evening of July 6. Learn To Bike

Program To Begin

WARREN – The Barber National Institute will sponsor a four-week learn-to-bike program in Warren starting July 6. Sessions will be at 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. at the Warren YMCA, 212 Lexington Ave., Warren, on Saturdays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27. The program is ideal for youngsters and young adults with special needs including autism, Down syndrome, mild cerebral palsy, sensory issues, developmental delays or behavioral issues. The bike camp also helps typically developing children who have not been able to make the transition to riding without training wheels. The cost for the program is $95, which may be covered through an FSS allocation. Families may also apply for grants to provide full or partial scholarships.
