FREDONIA

DOWNS GRAND ISLAND

GRAND ISLAND — Fredonia traveled to Grand Island to battle the Class A Vikings as well as bitter cold temperatures which included snow flurries in the first and seventh innings and the Hillbillies prevailed 12-7.

The visitors struck first for four runs in the opening frame, a lead they would see challenged multiple times but never relinquish. Following an Ashton Putney walk, Owen Rush blasted a two-run home run over the right field fence. Nathan Sercu (single) and Colin Luce (walk) reached base with two outs and later scored on an infield error.

Starting pitcher Matt Cowan earned the win, throwing four innings, scattering three hits, striking out six and allowing only twp earned runs. Sercu threw the final three innings for the save, striking out four and also allowing only three hits.

Fredonia stretched its lead to 5-1 in the inning when Rush hit a ground-rule double to score AJ Kinney (walk).

Grand Island closed the lead to 5-4 in the fifth and the score remained the same into the final inning, thanks to great defense from the Hillbillies, including a spectacular catch from Luca Gullo while crashing into the left field wall. In the seventh, Fredonia broke the game open with a seven-run outburst. Highlights in the inning included RBI singles from Sercu and Luce, a bases-loaded walk from Brady Helmer, and a Kinney two-run double.

Fredonia returns to CCAA divisional action on Tuesday, as it hosts Salamanca.

CATANESE SHINES

CLYMER — Tate Catanese tossed a complete-game five-hitter and helped his own cause with a triple and an RBI to lead Clymer/Sherman/Panama to a 6-1 victory over Chautauqua Lake in a Division 2 game.

The win improved the Wolfpack’s record to 1-2 overall and 1-1 the division, while the Eagles fell to 2-3 and 2-1.

Carson White collected two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while Andrew Spiesman and Kayden Beckerink both added two-baggers for the winners.

Greyson Wellman had two of Chautauqua Lake’s five hits.
