Construction to delay start of school in Sherman
Abigail Mellors will take over next school year as the student ex-officio member of the Sherman Board of Education.
SHERMAN — Due to the amount of summer construction associated with the Sherman Central School’s capital project, the district has decided to adjust the student start date to Sept. 8.
Carrie Yohe, district superintendent, said teachers will return to school on Sept. 1.
Yohe also said that she conducted an end of the year survey with teachers regarding professional development.
“Our goal is to begin writing Title 1 or Title 2 grants applications based on the professional development that teachers have identified,” she said. “By gathering feedback on the areas in which staff members would like additional training and support, we can align funding with district priorities and provide meaningful professional learning opportunities for everyone.
Yohe said once the areas of professional development are identified, the district’s hope is to have one teacher become an expert in each focus area and act as a mentor/coach for the other teachers.
In another matter, the board presented a certificate of gratitude to student ex-officio board member Brookelynn Wright and welcomed Abigail Mellors who will take the position next year. Several of the board members commented on the excellence of Wright’s reports throughout the year and expressed their gratitude for her dedication.
Yohe said that Wright was courageous in accepting the position.
“About a year ago, I found Brookelynn in the hallway and asked if she would be our first student ex-officio board member,” she said. “She said yes and took the leap of faith.”
In her final report, Wright spoke about going to the Special Olympics at Strider Field in Jamestown.
“It went very well from our end,” she said. “All of the kids seemed to have a lot of fun.”
Wright also reported on the Senior class trip, which included visiting Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg, and a boat ride during which they saw dolphins.
“It was the coolest trip we ever had,” she said. “I think it could not have gone better.”
Board members also approved a motion to participate with the RIC ONE Risk Operations Center (ROC) for the 2026-27 school year. By approving this motion, the board authorizes the Risk Operations Center and its attorneys to negotiate Data Privacy Agreements (DPAs) with vendors and third-party contractors.
The 2026-27 revised instructional calendar, the inter-municipal agreement with Clymer Central School for the shared cafeteria manager, the inter-municipal agreement with Cassadaga Valley Central School for the shared instructional technology specialist and the board of education meeting schedule for the 2026-27 school year were all approved by the board of education.
