Despite 3 Hits, Skunks Prevail
NIAGARA FALLS — Jamestown totaled just three hits — none after the third inning — but was able to beat the Niagara Power 5-2 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division action Friday at Sal Maglie Stadium.
The game was called after eight innings due to lightning.
The Tarp Skunks (8-6) scored four runs in the second inning on two hits and four walks, then added their final run in the third inning.
A pair of pitchers took full advantage of the five runs.
Ryan Bilka (Wagner College) started and went four innings, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out four. Frank Villella (Nova Southeastern University) threw the final four innings and allowed both runs on three hits and six walks while striking out two.
Luc Fuller (Drury University) doubled and drove in three of Jamestown’s four runs.
Jake Kernodle (Princeton University) walked with one out in the second inning, but was erased when Evan Fragela (University of Pitt-Bradford) hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Aidan Wallace (University of Tampa) then walked and Fragela stole third before Cooper Munro (Drury University) walked to load the bases.
Fuller then came through with what ended up being the biggest hit in the game when he cleared the bases with a three-run double. Kieran Gagnon (Gannon University) followed with an RBI single to give the Tarp Skunks a 4-0 lead.
Jamestown made it 5-0 in the third as Connor Bendeck (Spring Hill College) walked to open the inning and Henry Juan (Williams College) followed with a single. After Matt Thompson (Youngstown State University) hit into a fielder’s choice for the first out, Bendeck and Thompson pulled off a double steal to plate Bendeck with the fifth run.
Niagara (8-4) scored its only two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Billy Morris walked with one out and Zach Evans followed with a walk before Andrew Stillinger singled to load the bases. A walk to Vincent Mauro forced in the first run ahead of Nick Dicarlo’s RBI single, but Villella got out of the inning with a pop-up to the catcher and a fly out to center field before the game was called during the ninth inning.
Jamestown returns home today to take on the Newark Pilots at Diethrick Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Tarp Skunks will host the Power at 2 p.m.
