Three seniors from the Jamestown boys basketball team have joined a rare program fraternity, courtesy of the New York State Sportswriters Association.
In a link on its website Wednesday, the NYSSWA announced that Dominic Gonzalez, Elijah Farmer and Gavin Johnson have received Class AAA all-state recognition, marking only the second time that a trio of Red & Green players have been so honored in the same season.
The others? Tyrone Beaman, Mark Prechtl and Mike McElrath, who led Jamestown to a Section VI championship in 1980.
Forty-six years later, Gonzalez (fourth team), Farmer (sixth team) and Johnson (honorable mention) have now done the same thing, capping their careers by leading the Red & Green to a third straight sectional title.
Their numbers tell the story.

≤ Gonzalez: The Post-Journal/OBSERVER and Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 Player of the Year, the 6-foot guard averaged 19.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Arguably the best game of his career came in the sectional final against Health Sciences where he scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists, and had one block and one steal in a 61-55 victory. Gonzalez’s all-around game included effectiveness from the perimeter (he shot 41% from the arc) and an uncanny ability to score on floaters in the lane, helping him to finish his career 10th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,142 points.
≤ Farmer: A ninth-team all-state choice as a junior, the 6-5 forward averaged 16.5 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game this season, helping earn him ECIC Division 1 and Post-Journal/OBSERVER first-team honors. He was also credited with 27 blocked shots and completed his career with 948 points, which is 13th in school history.
≤ Johnson: A second-team Post-Journal/OBSERVER All-Star this season, Johnson, a 6-1 guard, was also an ECIC Division 1 honorable-mention selection after averaging 14.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
By virtue of being selected to one of the top eight Class AAA all-state teams, Gonzalez and Farmer will be inducted into the Jamestown Wall of Fame.
Other Western New Yorkers to receive all-state recognition in Class AAA were Amir Moye, Health Sciences, fifth team; Nahssan Young, Health Sciences, eighth team; Louis Porter, Niagara Falls, 13th team; Ryan Hartwig, Lancaster, honorable mention; Deandre Lewis, Niagara Falls, honorable mention; Ryan Smith, Lancaster, honorable mention; and Mychel Whitt, Health Sciences, honorable mention.
