Dunkirk’s Tell, Fredonia’s Koopman & Dowdy Honored

K’Vion Tell became the all-time leading scorer for Dunkirk boys basketball in his junior season as he scored the sixth-most points in Section VI with 542, leading the Marauders to the Class A1 quarterfinals with a 17-4 record.

Tell’s impressive season was noticed by the New York State Sportswriters Association and on Wednesday it was announced he was among the all-state selections for large schools, earning a spot on the Class A sixth team.

The distinction caps off an impressive season that also saw Tell named the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 Player of the Year and an OBSERVER/Post-Journal first-team all-star while averaging 25.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game for the Marauders.

While Tell earned the highest honor locally, not far below him were a pair of Fredonia players in seniors RJ Koopman and Donovan Dowdy who helped the Hillbillies win the Class A2 sectional title.

Koopman was named to the Class A seventh team in a season in which he averaged 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 3.0 steals while being a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 first-team all-star and OBSERVER/Post-Journal first-team all-star.

Dowdy earned a Class A 13th-team selection in a season in which he averaged 14.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocks while being a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 first-team all-star and OBSERVER/Post-Journal second-team all-star.

Section III’s Westhill won the Class A state championship and leading the way was senior Eli Prince, who averaged 25.6 points per game and was named the Player of the Year.

A pair of Section VI athletes were named to the first team with Grand Island junior Dane Brown, who averaged 23.7 points per game, and Iroquois senior Justus Kleitz, who led the section in scoring with 32.6 points per game.

Further representing Western New York were Lewiston-Porter senior Greydan Barnwell on the fourth team, Bishop Timon senior Jeson Huff on the ninth team, Lewiston-Porter junior Michael Wylke on the 12th team, and Grand Island junior Jake Castiglia, Buffalo Science senior Jaleel Flowers, Depew senior Mason McGloin, South Park junior Abdel Medna, East Aurora senior Alex Mior and Williamsville South senior Sean Munzert as honorable mentions.

After leading Achievement First to the New York City Public School Athletic League 3A championship, junior Tyler Romeo was named the Class AA Player of the Year while averaging 18.6 points per game.

Section VI earned plenty of recognition in Class AA with Lockport senior Charlie Croff being named to the first team after finishing fourth in the section in scoring with 29.6 points per game.

Behind Croff were Nichols senior Tre Paulfrey on the second team, St. Mary’s senior Will Szablewski on the third team, Kenmore West senior Harlem Brannon on the fifth team, St. Joe’s sophomore JJ Shanklin on the sixth team, St. Joe’s sophomore Gary Alexander IV on the seventh team, St. Mary’s junior Hank Williams Jr. on the seventh team, North Tonawanda senior Jack Giancola on the eighth team, Canisius junior Jack Cullinan on the 10th team, St. Francis senior Andrew Lindstrom on the 14th team, and North Tonawanda senior Ethan DeVantier, Williamsville North junior Greyson Goehle, Orchard Park junior Max Mancabelli, McKinley freshman Ca’Marii Staples, Canisius junior Christian Gill and Canisius junior Elijah Jones as honorable mentions.
