One by one, Jamestown Community College volleyball coach Ashley Lund was greeted by her family near the team bench Tuesday night at the Physical Education Complex.

First, she shared a long embrace with her husband, Patrick, and then she exchanged a high-five with their 11-year-old son, Alex.

And, finally, with 9-year-old Hanna looking on, Lund picked up 6-year-old Greta, who wrapped her arms around her mom’s neck in another celebratory hug.

Yes, there was plenty to smile about for the Lunds, and the entire Jamestown CC athletic program, for that matter. Because by virtue of the Jayhawks’ thrilling 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 15-13 NJCAA Region 3 Division III victory over Erie CC, Lund claimed the 300th win of her career.

The overseer of the program since 2008 — Lund stepped aside for one year in 2011 when Alex was born — the Russell, Pennsylvania resident’s record now stands at 300-106, including 5-5 this season (3-1 in Region 3 Division III).

“I never thought that I’d be here and have that many or meet this milestone,” she said. “It’s kind of surreal at this point. I knew it was creeping up, and to have it at home in front of my family, it’s awesome. It still doesn’t feel real that I have that many wins.”

Last night’s victory wasn’t assured until Emma McCarthy (Olean/Allegany-Limestone) tapped the ball over the net for the deciding point in the fifth game. She finished the evening with 24 digs, 10 kills and three aces, but there were plenty of teammates who contributed as well.

None more than Brianna Hopkins-Gilbert (Falconer/Chautauqua Lake).

Listed as an outside hitter on the roster, she was most effective when she was serving, particularly in the third game when the Jayhawks ran off eight straight points to dig themselves out of a 6-1 deficit on their way to a 25-16 win. That was especially important because the Kats won the fourth game, setting the stage for the decisive first-to-15 fifth set.

With Maggie McClelland (Olean/Olean) and Claire Pumford (Jamestown/Jamestown) leading the way, Jamestown CC dug itself out of an early hole, finishing on a 6-2 run to secure the milestone for their coach.

In addition to McCarthy, Hopkins-Gilbert finished with 12 digs and five aces; Megan Cotter (Jamestown/Southwestern) had 15 kills and nine digs; Maddie Johnson (Panama/Panama) collected 42 assists, five digs and two kills; Claire Pumford added three aces, 11 kills, six digs and four blocks; and McClelland contributed seven aces, one kill and 20 digs.

“I don’t put a big emphasis on the wins and losses,” Lund said. “It’s not really me, it’s them. They do all the work. I just show up and, hopefully, they listen a little bit and, hopefully, things happen for the good.”

George Sisson, Jamestown CC’s director of athletics, said Lund’s success over the years is a “perfect example of very good coaching and getting the most out of your kids.”

“She does it all the right way,” he added. “She runs a great practice … and she builds wonderful relationships with her kids. … You don’t get to 300 by chance and you don’t get to 300 by making stuff up. You get to 300 by having an idea of how you have to do it, then doing it and staying consistent. I’m happy for her.”

Lund will try to make it 301 wins today when the Jayhawks travel to Lakeland CC for a 6 p.m. match.
