Two Charged After Fight, Attack On Officers

With large groups of law-enforcement officers in the village of Fredonia attempting to keep Non Fred Fest in check, a large fight in the city of Dunkirk on Friday led to a pair being charged after city police were attacked while attempting to make arrests.

Dunkirk police reported Wednesday they were dispatched to the 500 block of Deer Street around 10:37 p.m.

Upon arrival officers were met with a crowd and were attempting to ascertain what occurred and de-escalate the situation. At that time several subjects began shoving officers and one subject, identified as Miguel A. Velez, 21, of Dunkirk, began actively fighting with officers.

While attempting to place him into custody a large group began surrounding officers, with some attempting to pull them off Velez and obstruct officers. One subject, identified as Omar A. Salome-Hernandez, 34, of Dunkirk, kicked an officer while he was on the ground with Velez and then grabbed a chair and began advancing on officers.

Additional officers, who at the time were assisting Fredonia Police for the downtown calamity, arrived on scene and attempted to take Salome-Hernandez into custody, who then immediately fled from officers on foot.

Officers continued dispersing the unruly crowd and Velez was transported back to Dunkirk Police headquarters and issued an appearance ticket for second-degree obstructing governmental administration. A warrant was filed for Salome-Hernandez for second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. He was later located on Monday by Dunkirk Police and arraigned. Dunkirk Police were assisted on scene by Fredonia Police, New York State Police and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
