The Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation hosted its annual spring high school sailing regatta at the Richard O. Hartley Park beach in Lakewood on Saturday.

Eight regional teams took part in C420 Class boats for a total of 12 races.

Wind conditions started off light in the morning, but gradually increased to 20 knots by mid-afternoon, offering a shifty, puffy course for sailors.

Southwestern had two teams competing, one comprised of high school students and another comprised of middle school students. Sailing in the A Division were Will Turner and Madie Overbeck with Patrick Kelly and Natalie Fosberg competing in the B Division. Overbeck and Fosberg are new to the high school team with Overbeck debuting at the New York State Championship.

The second team was made up of Heidi Swan-Leuze and Zoe Pike in the A Division with Philipp Meyer and Siri DuBois in the B Division. For Swan-Leuze and Pike, it was their first time sailing the C420.

Will Turner and Natalie Fosberg are pictured sailing Boat 3.

“I was very happy to see some of the students who have taken the sailing course continuing on to sail in our local event as well as being able to have a full team from Southwestern Middle School,” coach Hunter Farris said. “This is the kind of thing the CLCSF programs strive to promote: a fun environment for all ages to experience Chautauqua Lake in a new way.”

Southwestern Team No. 1 had four first-place finishes and two second-place finishes, ending the day with 31 points in second place.

Southwestern Team No. 2 had a best finish of fourth place before wind conditions became too strong for the youngest sailors to continue. Team No. 2 played eighth with six races completed.

St. Joe’s No. 1 took first, followed by Southwestern No. 2 and St. Joe’s No. 2.
