Jamestown Rallies Past Frontier For First ECIC Victory

HAMBURG — Winless in eight Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 games entering Tuesday, Jamestown looked like it was on its way to 0-9.

But some magic struck in the top of the seventh inning at Frontier.

The Red & Green used a four-run seventh inning to tie the game and then added five runs in the ninth to beat the Falcons 10-5 at Frontier High School.

“We’ve been telling them all year we have to get big hits in big situations,” Jamestown head coach Dave Roehmholdt said. “Today we got those big hits when we needed them.”

Antonie Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, Blake Smith Jr. singled and Xavier Foust reached on an error to load the bases in the top of the seventh. Adam Kubera then hit a two-run single and Alex Alvira walked before Dom Weber hit an RBI infield single to score Kubera. Frontier (9-3, 5-3) bobbled the ball on the play and Alvira scored the tying run.

After a scoreless eighth, Jamestown struck for five more runs in the ninth. Alvira and Caleb Piazza hit back-to-back singles before Chase Bonta walked with one out to load the bases. Rodriguez was then hit by another pitch to force in a run and Smith hit an RBI single. Foust followed with a sacrifice fly and Kubera hit a two-run double.

The comeback made a winner of Rodriguez, who started the fourth inning and finished the game with six scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked none.

“He came in and even some of our kids commented that he seemed like he had more velocity than normal,” Roehmholdt said. “He did a great job of keeping them off balance. He kept them from scoring again, and kept us in the game until we were able to get something going.”

Kubera finished with four hits and four RBIs, while Smith and Piazza each had three hits as part of Jamestown’s 15-hit attack. Bonta also doubled for the Red & Green (2-11, 1-8).

REYDA, SMITH SILENCE PANTHERS

MAYVILLE — Elliot Reyda and Clayton Smith combined on a seven-hitter and struck out nine to lead Chautauqua Lake to a 14-4 six-inning victory over Pine Valley in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 game.

Devin Hewes led the way for the Eagles (6-10, 6-6) with a single, four walks, three RBIs and two runs scored, while teammate Nate Henry collected a base hit and drove in two runs.

Sawyer Bradigan had two hits for the Panthers (0-12, 0-11).

BROCTON TURNS DOUBLE PLAY TO END IT

BROCTON — Damion Franklin walked and scored on Nate Laurito’s RBI double in the top of the seventh inning as Brocton beat Cassadaga Valley 5-4 in the completion of a Division 2 game halted in the second inning April 20.

The Cougars (6-6, 6-5) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Brocton third baseman Eric Pryll threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the first out. Donovan St. George then made a catch in right field and doubled off a Cassadaga Valley runner at first base for the final out of the game.

The Bulldogs (5-6, 5-6) led 4-2 when the game was suspended two weeks ago. Anthony Gatto threw the final five innings Tuesday, allowing three hits, two runs and four walks while striking out four. Anthony Gatto was 2 for 3, while Aiden Gatto singled and drove in a run.

Bradley Windnagle went 3 for 3 with three runs scored for Cassadaga Valley. Jackson Crowell threw the final five innings, allowing four hits, one run and three walks while striking out two.

TROJANS RALLY PAST DEPEW

DEPEW — Trailing 5-0 after one inning, Southwestern scored six runs in the top of the third and beat Depew 8-5 in nonleague action.
