Trump Labels Obama The ‘Worst’ President

To The Reader’s Forum: Donald J. Trump last week labeled former President Barack Obama our “worst president.” That baseless accusation was apparently based on General Flynn, a convicted liar, was “unmasked” by President Obama, when in fact Flynn had never been “masked” by anyone at any time. The label “worst president” is a most serious accusation and I envision several examples of what may qualify a president as “worst.” I think that a president who mimics a disabled reporter may qualify. A president who disrespects a Gold Star mother and father may ...

County Election Inspectors Worked For A Successful Election Day

To The Reader’s Forum: Volumes of complaints about Primary Election Day mismanagement are on the front page of newspapers across the entirety of New York State. We are glad to report that over 200 county election inspectors and Mayville staff worked and again brought home a successful June 23 Chautauqua County primary election. That’s not to say we had a perfect day. We never do. Anytime hundreds of workers deal with thousands of paper ballots at forty-nine different polling locations, mistakes do happen. Limiting mistakes starts with annual hands on classroom ...

The Prendergast Library Is An Invaluable Part In The Community

To The Reader’s Forum: On Dec. 21,1879, James Prendergast, grandson of founder of Jamestown died unexpected from illness in Buffalo, N.Y. Upon his wishes, all his profits of the Prendergast block was to go to build a free library. Pendergast Library was born. When it opened doors to public on Dec. 1, 1891, the evening journal noted, “The opening of the Prendergast Library marks an important epoch in our local history. Few communities can boast so magnificent a public gift.” This continues to be true today. With the passing of the vote to increase taxing to support of ...

The Second Amendment Is A Right To Bear Arms, Not A Right To Threaten

To The Reader’s Forum: The Second Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees a citizen of this country the right to bear arms. However, it does not give someone the right to threaten another person’s life with that weapon. As a matter of law, a verbal or written threat on someone’s life with a gun most likely is a crime. I was quite disturbed to read in this publication Christina Cardinale, the Democratic candidate for the 150th Assembly District which includes Chautauqua County, was receiving serious threats of harm by some who own guns. This is utterly deplorable. She was ...

VA Says Thank You

To The Reader’s Forum: This is in reference to a letter recently published from Rolland Kidder on June 20, 2020 in the Jamestown Post-Journal regarding the Jamestown VA clinic. VA Western New York Healthcare System established community-based clinics beginning in March of 1995 with the opening of the first clinic in Jamestown, New York. These community-based clinics allow Veterans to receive their care close to home with the same high-quality standards consistent with all VA sites of care. The clinic has been operated under a contract model since the inception in 1995, within the ...

Time To Change JHS Athletic Team Names

To The Reader’s Forum: Rickey Armstrong Sr., President of the Seneca Nation of Indians, responded to a petition calling for a change from Jamestown High School’s athletic team names by saying that names like Jamestown’s “degrade, mock, and offend Native traditions, Native culture, and Native people.” It is time we listen to what our Seneca Nation neighbors are telling us — this name is hurtful and offensive. Their voice and opinion on this issue is the only one that matters. It is past time to change the JHS athletic team names. Let’s turn a new page in our town’s ...
