Go Red Raiders, Go Tarp Skunks

To The Reader’s Forum:

Sports have been a big part of my life. A lot can be learned from watching and/or participating in sports. For example, sports can teach the overcoming of adversity, the importance of proper preparation and the will to do better everytime, whether said time is a practice or a national championship. Teamwork, strengths of all kinds, mental, physical, and emotional can also be included in the mix. I still consider myself a fan, although there hasn’t been a whole lot to watch lately. My love of sports is why I write.

A front page article in (June 19’s) Post-Journal is about a controversy over what JHS should or should not use as a nickname for their sports teams. I am truly puzzled by this! I do not believe any sports team chooses their nickname because they have animosity toward the subject of their choice! Why would they do that? Do they not want their team to be good, even great!?? Everybody knows this to be true. No one wants their team to be bad or disrespected, to “stink” as the saying goes. The only exception to this that I can think of is a local baseball team whose season has already been cancelled. My wife has a friend, who upon hearing the name of the new team replied, “Now I’ll have to move out of Jamestown.”

The point is; a choice is made out of admirationa and respect, something they want to attain the qualities of, and not for the purposes of mockery or direspect.

I know there are those who disagree and they are entitled to their opinions. Apparently, at least for some, imitation isn’t any longer considered the sincerest form of flattery.
