James Prendergast Library recently upgraded its Makerspace room with help of a grant totaling more than $46,724.
“The library applied for and was awarded a New York State Construction grant entitled Spotlight on STEM,” said Tress Williams, library manager, in a news release. “The library installed new sound-reducing panels, LED lighting, a new door to separate public and staff areas, improved storage, acoustics and lighting.”
The library created its Makerspace programming area in 2017. The Makerspace is designed to entertain and educate a wide variety of ages -from toddler though teenagers. Some of the activities currently offered for younger users include Magnatiles, Lincoln Logs, marble runs and K’Nex. Also, the space offers a more complex programming menu such as robotics, coding, stop motion technology 2D printing and more.
Moreover, the library also received funding from the Holmberg Foundation to support the expanded makerspace programming such as circulation science kits, a mobile Makerspace for outreach initiatives, new equipment and supplies for the Makerspace itself, reported Williams. Moreover, the Holmberg foundation’s support has also aided in expanded Makerspace programming for adults. New programs scheduled for 2024 include- digital preservation workshops, 3D printing classes and equipment available to be checked out, such as digital projectors and screens, science and literacy kits and board games.
The library offers programming at Makespace on weekdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and open play from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. free of charge and open to the public.
