DMV administrator to get salary increase
MAYVILLE – A member of the Department of Motor Vehicles is getting a salary increase, but not all county officials support the move.
During the Chautauqua County Legislature meeting, lawmakers approved a resolution to reallocate the salary grade for the motor vehicles administrator from grade 14 to grade 17 by a 12-5 vote.
The step level of the administrator was not announced. According to the CSEA 6300 Salary Schedule, a Grade 14 Step 3 employee receives $25.91 an hour. A Grade 17 Step 3 employee receives $28.28 an hour. A Grade 14 Step 11 employee receives $33.71 an hour while a Grade 17 Step 11 employee receives $37.39 an hour.
During a committee meeting the week before, County Clerk Greg Carlson discussed the resolution.
He said the proposal was “budget neutral,” noting that he was able to find additional savings and revenue in his department to cover the costs.
According to Carlson, he was able to reduce his salary and benefits of his department by $27,000 and was able to generate about $8,000 by having destroyed license plates be recycled instead of going to the county landfill.
Carlson said this new position has new responsibilities; it’s not just an increase in pay.
During the full legislature committee meeting, Legislators Bob Bankoski, D-Dunkirk; Marcus Buchanan, D-Dunkirk; Sandra Lewis, D-Fredonia; Fred Larson, D-Jamestown; and Bob Whitney, D-Jamestown voted against it.
Legislator Tom Nelson, D-Jamestown, who is a member of the Audit and Control Committee and heard the presentation, along with the 11 present Republican legislators, all voted in favor of the resolution.
