Last Call

“Rolling Hills Radio” is wrapping up its season Thursday with a dose of alternative country music.

The program’s final show of the 2013-14 season, Episode No. 33, will culminate with the in-house taping of a live performance by Watkins and the Rapiers at the Reg Studio Theater.

The six-piece band out of Rochester formed in 1996, and has since released three full-length albums of original music – including one Christmas album – written by the group’s four principle songwriters. The band consists of: Scott Regan, guitar and vocals; Kerry Regan, bass, vocals, harmonica, guitar and kazoo; Tom Whitmore, bass, guitar, mandolin and vocals; Marty York, drums, percussion, washboard and vocals; Steve Piper, guitar, ukulele and vocals; and Rick McRae, trombone and keyboards, who has previously performed with They Might Be Giants.

As the group’s material is composed by four individual members, rather than the traditional one or two principle songwriters per group, original Watkins and the Rapiers songs explore a number of categories. “It’s Americana music, folk music with a beat; exploring many genres rather than calculating a sound to fit a marketing category,” proclaims the band’s classification of itself on its website at www.rapiers.org.

Thursday’s show will begin with an opening reception at 5:30 p.m., and will be followed by publicity photos at 6:30 p.m. and the actual taping beginning at 7 p.m.

According to Ken Hardley, host of “Rolling Hills Radio,” the band will perform eight original songs, followed by one in which he will be joining the group.

“This is a one-of-a-kind band,” Hardley said. “You’ll never see another band like this, and nothing before or after will compare to the experience of seeing Watkins and the Rapiers. It will definitely be a good time with good songs.”

Hardley said a meet and greet will follow the live taping, where the band will be available to chat with and sign CDs for guests of the program.

The Reg Studio Theater is located at 108 E. Third St. in Jamestown. Tickets are $10.
