Trump Is Trying To Get China To Play By Rules

To The Reader’s Forum: The resulting hollowing out of American manufacturing was just accepted as the price of having China inside rather than outside of the global trading system. This was the view of the Bush and Obama administrations. However, China has been cheating and President Trump is calling them out. Here is why: China has used debt imperialism. It lends money to developing countries then seizes collateral assets like mines and infrastructure when the loans aren’t repaid. The Chinese practice extreme protectionism. China keeps foreign goods out with high rariffs and ...

The Presence Of Guns Amplifies Mental Health Issues In Mass Shootings

To The Reader’s Forum: Recently you printed an editorial regarding mass shootings and mental illness. While we all agree that someone who would kill random people is mentally ill, blaming the illness is not going to solve our problem in this country. The United States, I am sure, has no higher number of cases of mental illness than any other developed countries, yet we are the only developed country that has this level of mass shootings. The only reason that is different in this country than in the others, is the easy availability of guns. We’ve all heard the adage ...

Reader Speaks On State Policies, Taxes

To The Reader’s Forum: Can’t help but be confused by all of the TV commercials and ads touting affordable New York health care. They must be talking about the ever-increasing number of folks who get it free — Medicaid. It’s simply a continuation of all of the Obamacare lies: keep your health plan and doctor, lower premiums and health-care costs, etc. Having purchased insurance through the New York marketplace for four years, I have seen premiums rise by 25 percent the first two years and 40 percent this year. My wife and I now spend nearly 20 percent of our income on ...

Student Speaks On Potential Education Cuts

To The Reader’s Forum: My name is Connor Beal. I am in my junior year at Clymer Central School where I am the current Student Council president and have been elected president of the Class of 2020. I play both basketball and baseball, I am in the band and I am active in various clubs. I have taken college courses and I am currently enrolled in additional college classes for my senior year. I’m telling you this because all of these things are on a list of possible cuts that will affect myself and my schoolmates and our educational future if they are taken away from us. Eight ...

Seat Belts Are Crucial Safety Devices In Cars

To The Reader’s Forum: As you note in your May 30 editorial (“It Will Take Time to Change Minds, Make Rear Seat Belts Safer”), our research has highlighted some deficiencies in protection for back-seat passengers in today’s vehicles. That doesn’t mean, however, that there’s any doubt about the importance of using seat belts in every seating position during every trip. Nor does it mean that states need to hold off on requiring seat belt use in every seating position, as you suggest. In a study that we conducted in 2014 with researchers from the Children’s Hospital of ...

Falconer After Prom Party Successful

To The Reader’s Forum: It is with great honor that I can say that Falconer pulled off its 31st annual After-Prom Party on May 18, 2019. Once again we transformed the school into a western haven. This year’s theme was Best In The West At FCS, with a mechanical bull. We had over 155 children and 80 adults attend the all-night event. There were some students from other schools with their dates from Falconer and the look on their faces was worth a million bucks. The kids were able to play games to win funny money which they could purchase from a selection of over 200 gifts and ...
