BUFFALO — A year ago, Jamestown’s season came to an end in the paint at the east end of the Buffalo State Sports Arena when the Red & Green were called for a loose-ball foul at the end of their Section VI Class AA final loss to Niagara Falls.

A year later, Health Sciences was attempting to end Jamestown’s season at the same spot.

This time, the Red & Green held on.

Falcons sophomore Amir Moye missed a potential game-tying shot in the lane in the final seconds and the rebound ended up in the hands of Red & Green senior Jack Carlson as time expired as Jamestown escaped the Class AA crossover game with a 59-57 overtime victory Tuesday night.

“Some of the guys who came back really felt like they let one get away last year, or to some extent had one taken away,” Jamestown head coach Bill Miley said. “I’m really happy for those seniors who were there last year to be able to pull this one out and keep advancing.”

The win sends the Red & Green to Saturday’s 7:45 p.m. New York State Public High School Athletic Association Far West Regional against Section V champion Victor back at Buff State.

Victor, the defending state champion, beat Greece Athena in the Rochester area’s title game last Saturday.

“At this point, everybody is good and everybody is going to give you their best shot,” Miley said. ” … They have to prepare for us, too. If we do what we want to do, I like our chances.”

Health Sciences led for most of the game Tuesday, but the Red & Green never got too far behind.

Eventually, Jamestown sophomore Elijah Farmer tied the game with a little over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Senior Bishop Butts then blocked a shot at the other end of the floor before scoring to give the Red & Green a 46-44 lead with 1:59 remaining.

“They are obviously a big, strong team. Size really isn’t one of our strengths. He stepped up for us inside and was getting on the glass,” Miley said of Butts. “He was able to get to the foul line, knock down some shots, and blocked a few shots for us as well. He was great in the second half.”

Falcons senior Montrice Webster tied the game with a second-chance bucket before Moye turned a turnover into two points and a 48-46 lead with 1:03 left.

Jamestown missed what would’ve been a go-ahead 3-point attempt and Health Sciences looked like it might have a chance to put the game away at the foul line, but Butts stole a ball at half-court, then got it back in the lane before converting another tying bucket with 23.9 seconds left in the game.

“That felt really good. After that steal, I just knew I had to go in and get a bucket,” Butts said. “We were down 2, I knew the situation we were in, I just had to go finish it out.”

The Falcons had one last chance to win it, but Moye attempted to find an open teammate under the basket and threw the ball away.

Three times in overtime, the Red & Green led by as many as four, but each time the Falcons came back – twice on Moye buckets.

“Amir got it going a little bit. We tried to force him into being a shooter, even though he’s a really good shooter, but we wanted to take his drives away,” Miley said. “We tried to contain him as much as we could, and we were able to do it just enough.”

Carlson made it 57-53 with 1:29 left; senior Greg Brumagin made it 58-55 with 43.5 seconds left; and sophomore Dominic Gonzalez made it 59-57 with 22.4 seconds left.

“You get a guy like Jack Carlson, who comes off the bench, and makes three or four incredible hustle plays. That’s the stuff he does,” Miley said. “He could care less about scoring. … He played his butt off and that’s the reason he gets the minutes he does.”

Jamestown turned the ball over on an offensive rebound with 17.9 seconds left, giving Health Sciences one final opportunity.

This time, Moye wasn’t going to give away the last shot, instead driving into the lane and putting up a shot through relatively little contact, but drawing iron before Carlson’s rebound at the buzzer.

“I saw Amir coming into the lane, he’s not bad,” Butts said. “Him coming downhill like that and him missing that shot, getting that rebound definitely meant a lot.”

“We knew it would be a fight tonight,” Miley said. ” … It was one of those games where it felt like it would come down to the last possession and it did.”

NOTES: Butts had 19 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots, while junior Jaydian Johnson had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists for Jamestown, which shot 21 of 51 from the field, including 1 of 8 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 13 times. … Moye had 27 points for Health Sciences, which shot 22 of 63, including 4 of 14 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 12 times.
