MAYVILLE — Matt Cummings didn’t mince words when describing Nate Henry.

“He’s our captain for a reason,” the Chautauqua Lake coach said. “We go as he goes. He’s pretty fun to watch.”

That was particularly so on Friday.

The junior pitcher tossed a complete-game four-hitter, striking out eight and walking two as the Eagles beat Westfield 4-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball.

Henry also helped his own cause with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.

Michael Jauss added a pair of singles for the Eagles (5-7, 5-4), Devin Hewes smacked a double and Nolan Olson drove in a pair of runs.

For Westfield, Danny Bratton took the loss, working 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking three. Tristen Phillips came on in relief.

SHEESLEY LEADS BEARS’ OFFENSE

SINCLAIRVILLE — Maddox Sheesley doubled and drove in five runs to power Frewsburg past Cassadaga Valley 12-0 in five innings of Division 2 play.

Garrett Brink threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk on the mound for the Bears (15-0, 9-0).

Chase Haglund and Brink each had a pair of singles in Frewsburg’s 13-hit attack. Aidan Gruber drove in two runs.

Greg Edson, Logan Hayward and Mason Rhodes singled for the Cougars (5-5, 5-4). Hunter Johnson struck out four in four innings on the mound.

WALSH OUTDUELS ROSS

LAKEWOOD — Jameson Walsh threw a complete-game four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks as Southwestern beat Salamanca 5-1 in Division 1 play at Packard Field.

Left-hander Jaxson Ross was nearly as dominant for the Warriors, throwing a one-hitter with seven strikeouts, but five walks and four errors were costly.

Peter Conley had Southwestern’s lone hit, an RBI double to tie the game in the fourth inning. Conley later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

The Trojans (11-2, 8-2) added three runs in the fifth inning. Walsh walked with the bases loaded to force in Robbie Bellardo, Conley hit an RBI fielder’s choice and Wilson Genareo scored on an error.

Cole Urbanski had two hits and Nolan Seeley doubled for Salamanca (8-6, 2-6).

GOWANDA HOLDS OFF BLACK KNIGHTS

SILVER CREEK — Gowanda took the lead with a three-run sixth inning and held on for a 6-4 Division 3 win over Silver Creek/Forestville.

Logan Ruff led off the inning with a double and Ben VanNote walked before Carson Huch’s RBI groundout tied the game at 3-all. Blake Herman was then hit by a pitch and Drew Kota reached on an error, allowing VanNote to score. Herman then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.

The Panthers scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh inning to make it 6-3 before surviving in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, the Black Knights’ Aiden Piccolo doubled and Alex Galfo hit an RBI single. Galfo went to second on the throw, but Carter Capozzi’s 10th strikeout of the game allowed Gowanda to hold on for the victory.

Seth Geiger doubled and scored a run, while Kota had two RBIs for the Panthers (10-1, 9-0).

Dom Anders doubled, while Galfo had two hits and two RBIs for Silver Creek/Forestville. John Steinwachs, Manny Sanchez and Jake Anders combined to strike out seven on the mound.

HINSDALE DRIVES IN THREE

CLYMER — Bryce Hinsdale went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored for Clymer/Sherman/Panama in a 9-6 Division 2 win over Brocton.

Tate Catanese had two hits and three runs scored; Grant Lictus had two hits; and Tanner Mihalko doubled for the Wolfpack (7-3, 7-2). Kaden Beckerink threw five innings and struck out seven before Kolin Sturges and Carson White got the final six outs.

Anthony Gatto had two hits and two runs scored for the Bulldogs (4-5, 4-5). Nathan Laurito and Gatto combined for four strikeouts on the mound.

DUNKIRK FALLS AT HAMBURG

HAMBURG — Gavin Puchalski, Max Gladke and Brendan Reagan combined on a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as Hamburg beat Dunkirk 6-0 in nonleague action.

Jonah Moscato had two hits, including a double, and Gladke also had two hits for the Bulldogs (9-3).

Paul Trippy III and Zachary Zentz each singled for the Marauders (7-7).

RANDOLPH EARNS FIRST VICTORY

RANDOLPH — Conner Braley doubled twice as Randolph picked up its first win of the season, 13-7 over Cattaraugus-Little Valley in Division 3 play.

The Cardinals (1-12, 1-9) scored three runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Mike Bohall, Bryson Pitts and Wyatt Weaver each had two hits, including a double. David Malone threw six innings and struck out six while allowing five hits.

Camden Young had two hits, including a double, and Nate Wolf also had two hits for the Timberwolves (2-9, 1-8).

PETRYSZAK TOSSES NO-HITTER

PORTVILLE — Luke Petryszak threw a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks as Portville blanked Ellicottville 20-0 in Division 3.

At the plate, Petryszak was 2 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Nik Manroe had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs; Hayden Emley doubled and drove in two runs; and Karsen Padlo and Zach Perkins each added a pair of hits for the Panthers (11-0, 10-0).

The Eagles fell to 3-7 overall and 2-7 in the league.

OLEAN PREVAILS IN SEE-SAW GAME

OLEAN — Olean took advantage of an uncharacteristically wild Fredonia pitching staff (seven hit batters, six walks) Friday evening, defeating the visiting Hillbillies at St. Bonaventure by a score of 10-7 in Division 1 play.

A hit batter in front of an Andre Fratercangelo inside-the-park home run gave Olean (5-5, 5-2) a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Four straight hit batters and an errant throw trying to complete a potential inning-ending double play immediately followed — pushing the Olean lead to five runs.

Fredonia (9-3, 6-2) wasted no time, tying the game in the top of the third inning as Colin Crowell singled and scored on Brady Helmer’s inside-the-park home run to center field. After a strikeout, Ashton Putney and Matt Cowan singled and Owen Rush walked to load the bases. All three would score — courtesy of a Colin Luce ground out, a passed ball and a Nathan Sercu single.

Austin Miles hit a two-out, two-run double in the third to put Olean back in front. Danny Havers and Aaron Vincent would drive in important insurance runs, respectively, for Olean — as it built its second five-run advantage of the game.

Fredonia would stage a late rally in the seventh as Ashton Putney tripled to deep center field, scoring on a Matt Cowan groundout, and Owen Rush hit a towering home run well over the left-center field wall — closing the Olean lead to 10-7.

It would not be enough, however, as Olean reliever Chase Vogtli induced a groundout to end the game.
