Hooses, Calimeri Power Southwestern To C/D Crown

Southwestern won a dual meet against Falconer earlier this season for the first time in over a decade.

On Saturday, the Trojans edged the Golden Cougars for the Section VI Class C/D championship in their home gym as all nine of their entries qualified for next Saturday’s Section VI Division II state qualifier at Lake Shore High School.

Carmine Calimeri, Neves Hoose and Tavio Hoose won titles, while Adrian Torres, Kenji Walters and Brayden Potter lost in the finals as Southwestern finished with 187.5 points.

“We had a great year. This group of seniors — Neves, Bo (Wendel), Peter (Conley) and Kenji — I started coaching these guys in seventh grade. It’s been a nice run together culminating in a great season,” Southwestern head coach Johnny Vogan said. “We’re ready to hopefully bring home some hardware from Albany.”

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley was second with 170.5 points, led by champions Evan Newman and Brayden Newman.

“Our path was that we had to be perfect,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley head coach Drew Wilcox said when asked if a first-place finish was possible. “I had it at about 40 points, but I’m really happy with how these kids wrestled. They wrestled hard, they wrestled with class. I couldn’t be more proud of this team right now.”

At 131 pounds, the Trojans couldn’t lose as teammates Carmine Calimeri and Kenji Walters — who earned his 100th career victory earlier in the day — faced off. Both qualified for the state tournament a year ago at different weights, but will look to advance at the same weight this year. Calimeri won 10-1 on Saturday.

“Kenji has wrestled the top two kids at 124 multiple times this year and hadn’t cracked either one of them,” Vogan said. ” … He felt like his best chance to get through his senior year was going up to 131 and trying to get that runnerup finish to hopefully get through to Albany.”

Neves Hoose became Southwestern’s second champion when he beat Franklinville’s Evan Leonard 10-3 at 170 pounds.

“Neves has been on a different level all year. He’s practiced harder, he’s sought out the best competition. … Neves has wrestled well all year,” Vogan said. “He’s top 10 in New York state right now. I definitely think this is finally his year to go to Albany and hopefully be on the podium. I definitely feel he has the opportunity and the talent to be a top-six finisher this year.”

At 190 pounds, defending state champion Tavio Hoose took a big lead on Medina’s Conor Crandall before pinning him in 3:28.

“We’ve gone out and wrestled the best competition. What he’s accumulated by beating other wrestlers is phenomenal,” Vogan said. ” … His only loss this year was to the No. 6 wrestler in the nation and that was by decision. His goal is to be a four-time state champion.”

The Trojans’ Adrian Torres took second place at 101 pounds. With 47 seconds left in regulation, Torres escaped Newfane’s Jakob Lucinski. In overtime, Torres nearly earned the win with a takedown, but Lucinski quickly flipped the script and secured a winning takedown.

“He’s an emotional kid, but when we step back and look at it … he got out on bottom twice and took it into overtime. He had some close calls that could’ve gone either way,” Vogan said. “Hopefully we can put a good tournament together and have that match again next week.”

Southwestern’s Brayden Potter tried to become the Trojans’ fourth and final champion at 215 pounds, but he ended up on the wrong side of a pin in 3:05 to Maple Grove’s Matt Trim.

“Right now, our goal for Brayden is to try and get to the finals for a second-place finish and a trip to Albany,” Vogan said. “If we can beat Trim, great, but Brayden is only a sophomore so he’ll have plenty of more cracks at a Section VI championship.”

Evan Newman earned Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s first title of the day at 108 pounds when he strategically picked up a 2-0 decision over Medina’s Reece Senske.

“He wrestled smart and stayed in good positions. He found a way to win,” Wilcox said. “He’ll have to beat that kid and others next weekend if he wants to end up in Albany.”

Evan’s older brother, Dylan, followed at 116 pounds and dominated Eden’s Ruger Pastwik in a 58-second pin.

“Dylan is wrestling very well. He’s looking good in the room,” Wilcox said. ” … The sky’s the limit for him.”

Randolph finished fifth in the team standings with 114 points, led by Caden Inkley’s 4-2 decision over Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Michael Horth in the 152-pound final. Horth’s Panthers took eighth with 90 points.

Other local team finishes included: Maple Grove (seventh, 99 points), Frewsburg (14th, 37 points) and Salamanca (15th, 36 points).

Local individual third-place finishers included: Frewsburg’s Logan Fuller at 108 pounds, Southwestern’s Miles Torres at 116 pounds, Randolph’s Domanik Clark at 131 pounds, Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Nathan Warrior at 138 pounds, Southwestern’s Bohdan Wendel at 145 pounds, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Mason Kilmer at 152 pounds, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Patrick Braley at 160 pounds and Salamanca’s Keegan Hardy at 285 pounds.

In fourth place were: Randolph’s Kamren Anderson (101 pounds), Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Gabe Lundmark (124 pounds), Maple Grove’s Mason Kraft (138 pounds), Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Charlie Reichenbach (145 pounds), Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Riley Best (170 pounds) and Randolph’s Maverick Adams (190 pounds).

Winners of fifth-place matches included: Frewsburg’s Mason Raymond (101 pounds), Randolph’s Parker Paterson (116 pounds), Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Owen Pfaffenbach (124 pounds), Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Noah Brandt (145 pounds), Southwestern’s Peter Conley (170 pounds) and Maple Grove’s Kolden McCall (190 pounds).

The top five in each weight class advanced to the state qualifier.

“We have some chances. You have to show up and have your best day on the right day,” Wilcox said of the Golden Cougars sending more wrestlers to states. “To be honest, a couple of them might need a little luck along the way, but those things happen out there.”
