Clara Steinberg is listed as a point guard, shooting guard and power forward on the Eisenhower (Pennsylvania) High School girls basketball roster.

That’s only appropriate.

Because she does a little bit of everything.

That was on display Wednesday night at the Jamestown Community College Holiday Showcase as the 5-foot-8 sophomore scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Knights to a 50-45 nonleague victory over Sherman Central School.

The win evened Eisenhower’s record at 3-3 on the season, leaving head coach DJ Steinberg in an upbeat mood upon leaving the locker room at the Physical Education Complex.

“When they come out and play with heart, they’re tough to deal with,” he said.

Lainey Font chipped in 10 points and Laney Belcher added 7 for the Knights, who do not have a junior or senior on their nine-player roster. But their youth hardly showed as they kept their composure down the stretch to reach the .500 mark heading into the new year.

The game was close throughout — Eisenhower’s biggest lead was six points late in the second quarter — and the outcome wasn’t decided until the closing seconds.

“I know the program history at Sherman,” Coach Steinberg said. “Watching film on them, they’re a good team. I knew coming out here that we weren’t going to walk away with a 20-point win.”

As it turned out, it was just the opposite.

After the Wildcats’ Kelsey Wagner scored on a drive to the basket to pull her team to within 46-45 with 1:37 remaining, the Knights’ Miranda Gates answered with a layup 40 seconds later. And after a series of timeouts and fouls, neither team scored again until Clara Steinberg connected on two free throws with two seconds left to secure the victory.

“She works harder than any kid that I’ve ever met,” Coach Steinberg said. “I’m lucky to have her as a daughter. When she was younger, I pushed her, but now she pushes me. Every chance she has to play basketball, she’s out there. She honestly lives for moments like this when she can do her thing.”

Leading the way for Sherman (6-3) were Kelsey Wagner with 16 points and Tayden Persons with 14.

“We were really coming into this game blind,” Wildcats head coach Emily Eckwahl said. “I really didn’t have material to scout (Eisenhower), so I’m pleasantly surprised at how well we adjusted on the fly with such a young team.”

In the end, though, Clara Steinberg was the difference.

“She obviously has an inside-outside threat,” Eckwahl said. “We were overplaying her outside and hoping that we could stop her with our help defense. She has a lot of tools in her toolbox that she uses. She’s just a phenomenal ball-handler, and she finishes at the rim as well as anyone that we’ve seen so far.”
