The Jamestown boys basketball team is just past the midway point of its regular season and Coach Ben Drake believes the Red Raiders are ahead of where he thought they’d be as January nears its end.

Wednesday night they weren’t tested.

Trey Drake scored 18 points, Bishop Butts had 16, and Sean Paige and Max Knight added 10 apiece to send Jamestown to an 88-41 victory over West Seneca West in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 game at McElrath Gymnasium.

The win improved the Red Raiders’ record to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the league, while the Indians fell to 3-9 and 0-7.

“I think our best basketball is ahead of us,” Coach Drake said. “We’ve had some tough opponents and we have some really good ones coming up here in the next couple weeks. We’re just trying to continue to get better so we’re playing our best basketball at the end of February.”

There was little doubt about the game’s outcome as Jamestown led 25-2 six minutes in and finished the first half on a 25-0 run to take a 52-13 advantage into the break.

The second half was much of the same as the hosts opened the third quarter by outscoring West Seneca West 18-2, which allowed Coach Drake to empty his bench for the remainder of the game. The highlights of that surge were a pair of dunks by Butts seconds apart.

“In a game like this where it gets lopsided, you just want to make sure you’re playing the right way and sharing the ball and we did that,” Coach Drake said.

The Red Raiders will be back in action Saturday when they entertain Park School at 6 p.m.
