Hilliker leads at North Hills GC

CORRY, Pa. — Josh Hilliker shot a 1-under par 71 at North Hills Golf Course to win last week’s Wednesday Travel League event.

Hilliker joined Kevin Kaszuba (70) as the only league golfers to shoot under par. Hilliker led both front (36) and back (35) nines. Ed Tofil finished second with 78 and Jeff Marsowicz was third with 82.

Dave Franklin was the B Flight winner and Bill Emery, making his league debut, was the C Flight winner. The low round by a senior was recorded by Ron Szach. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jack Hood.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Ed Tofil (No. 2), Marsowicz (Nos. 4 and 11), Ryan Tofil (No. 5) and Josh Hilliker (Nos. 9 and 12); B Flight, Tim Walawender (No. 5), Phil Hopkins (Nos. 6 and 11) and Franklin (Nos. 16 and 18); C Flight, Emery (Nos. 3, 7 and 9), Ken Kaus (Nos. 6, 8 and 17), Brady Hilliker (No. 13), Bob Kujawa (No. 15) and Don Kujawa (No. 18).

Closest to the pin were: Hopkins (No. 4), Josh Hilliker (No. 7), Mike Willoughby (No. 11) and Tom Destro (No. 15). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Josh Hilliker (A Flight), Walawender (B) and Emery (C).

This week Jeff Marsowicz went over 1,500 career points and Gary Haase became just the sixth golfer to play in 400 events.

This week the league will hold its fifth annual “Uncle Buck Classic” at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course. The event honors the life and memory of Edward “Butch” Mackowiak. Starting this year, the event will be combined with the “New York Open,” the league’s second major of the season. Butch was instrumental in many facets of the league’s development and success, including donating the Statue of Liberty statuette given each year to one of the New York Open flight winners

The “Uncle Buck Classic” starts at 10 a.m. with dinner at the American Legion Post 62 in Dunkirk afterwards. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon today by calling 716-785-2291.
