Randolph, Fredonia Open No. 5 In Rankings

Fredonia and Randolph were the top local teams mentioned by the New York State Sportswriters Association as the organization released its first football rankings of the season Wednesday.

Fredonia, which is one of four teams at 1-0 in Class C South entering this weekend’s games, is ranked No. 5 in Class C after beating Akron, Allegany-Limestone and Tonawanda by a combined 81-22 to open this season. The Hillbillies host Salamanca, another 1-0 team in the division, at 7 p.m. Friday at the Orange Bowl.

Randolph is No. 5 in Class D. The Cardinals are 3-0 on the season, including 2-0 in Class D play. Brent Brown’s team has beaten Salamanca, Clymer/Sherman/Panama and Franklinville/Ellicottville by a combined 102-50 thus far this season. Randolph hosts Frewsburg on Friday night.

Also in Class D, Portville is No. 9 after opening the season 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Panthers have beaten Allegany-Limestone, Frewsburg and Wilson by a combined 95-14 and travel to Ellicottville to take on Franklinville/Ellicottville on Friday.

The Titans are 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the league after losing to Randolph last Friday night. Franklinville/Ellicottville, which is ranked No. 12 in Class D, beat St. Mary’s and Wilson to open the season.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama, which has wins over Wilson and Gowanda/Pine Valley on the season, is listed as honorable mention in Class D. The Wolfpack travels to Cattaraugus-Little Valley tonight.

Gowanda/Pine Valley is also an honorable-mention selection in Class D after beating Silver Creek/Forestville and Cattaraugus-Little Valley to open the season. The Panthers travel to Wilson on Friday.

In Class A, Jamestown is No. 12 after beating Lockport 55-34 last Friday night at Strider Field. The Red Raiders, who opened with losses at Class AA Lancaster and Orchard Park, host honorable-mention Williamsville North on Friday night.

In Class B, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove is an honorable-mention selection after beating Albion and East Aurora/Holland to open the season. The Golden Cougars, who lost at honorable-mention Cheektowaga last Friday, host another honorable-mention selection, Olean, on Saturday at Bill Race Field.

In Class C, Eden/North Collins and Southwestern are honorable-mention choices.

The Raiders lost to Tonawanda to open the season, but have beaten Newfane and Springville the last two weeks. They will host JFK on Friday.

The Trojans lost to Class B No. 2 Iroquois to open the season, but have bounced back with wins over Depew and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton. They travel to Silver Creek to take on the Black Knights on Friday.

Other ranked Western New York teams include: Bennett (No. 11), Lancaster (No. 16), St. Francis (No. 21), Canisius (No. 25) and Orchard Park (honorable mention) in Class AA; WNY Maritime (No. 18), Williamsville East (No. 23), Frontier (HM), McKinley (HM), South Park (HM) and Sweet Home (HM) in Class A; Pioneer (No. 8), Maryvale (No. 18), Albion (HM) and West Seneca East (HM) in Class B; and Medina (No. 8), Lackawanna (No. 14) and Akron (HM) in Class C.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Iona Prep of the Catholic High School Athletic Association, Class A Somers of Section I, Class B Maine-Endwell of Section IV, Class C Chenango Forks of Section IV and Class D Tioga of Section IV.

BOYS SOCCER

Maple Grove is the top-ranked local team in the boys soccer rankings released Tuesday.

The Red Dragons are No. 7 in Class D with a 6-1-1 record, including 4-0-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Central Division play.

Chautauqua Lake is No. 9 in Class C with a 4-1-1 overall record, including 2-1-1 in Central Division action.

Portville is No. 16 in Class C with a 4-3-1 overall record, including 2-1-1 in East Division play.

Other Section VI teams in the rankings include: Clarence (No. 4) and Lancaster (No. 19) in Class AA; Williamsville East (No. 5) and Williamsville South (No. 8) in Class A; and Lewiston-Porter (No. 10), East Aurora (No. 14) and Lafayette (No. 18) in Class B.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Scarsdale of Section I, Class A Amityville of Section XI, Class B Babylon of Section XI, Class C Avon of Section V and Class D Chazy of Section VII.

GIRLS SOCCER

Frewsburg is the lone local team in the girls soccer rankings. The Bears are No. 14 in Class C with a 8-0-0 overall record, including 3-0-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Central Division play.

Allegany-Limestone is No. 15 in Class B.

Other Western New York teams in the rankings include: Clarence (No. 4) and Lancaster (No. 25) in Class AA; Niagara-Wheatfield (No. 10), North Tonawanda (No. 14) and Nardin (No. 25) in Class A; Nichols (No. 9) in Class B; and St. Mary’s of Lancaster (No. 3) in Class C.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Ward Melville of Section XI, Class A New Hartford of Section III, Class B Seaford of Section VIII, Class C Waterford-Halfmoon of Section II and Class D Mount Academy of Section III.
