Westfield Downs Sherman For Title

WESTFIELD — Cole Holland scored 21 points and collected four steals, and Darien Swanson added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals to lead Westfield to a 57-45 victory over Sherman in the championship game of the Westfield Holiday Tournament on Thursday night.

Carson Swanson added 15 points, Wyatt Schuster grabbed five boards and Chris Rotunda blocked two shots for the Wolverines, who improved to 8-1.

Westfield jumped out a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 36-25 at intermission. The second half was played on even terms.

“We have generally a big team with 15 kids (on the roster),” Wolverines coach Nolan Swanson said. “We’re currently only getting in seven of them, but we have capable guys who aren’t getting time who are engaged and are a great bench. The team is bonding well. We have good crowd support. The town has maybe noticed our good start to the season.”

Gerald Carris led the Wildcats (4-3) with 20 points and Elijah Kioko chipped in 13.

Darien Swanson was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Holland and Carson Swanson of Westfield; Carris and Kioko of Sherman; and Lawson Ormsby of Chautauqua Lake.

T’BIRDS WIN CONSOLATION

WESTFIELD — The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds held off the Dunkirk Marauders 61-54 in the consolation game.

At halftime the Thunderbirds led 30-25 lead and held on for the win.

Lawson Ormsby turned in a huge game for Chautauqua Lake, scoring 24 points and grabbing 18 rebounds; Jalen Parkhurst added 8points and dished four assists; and Carson D’Anthony scored 7 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and made three steals.

Dunkirk was led by Marcel Carter with 18 points and A’Marion Tell with 13.

SHERMAN DOWNS CLCS

WESTFIELD — The Sherman Wildcats defeated Chautauqua Lake 47-26 in the first round.

The Wildcats built a multiple-possession lead in the second quarter after a tight first quarter and led 23-18 at half. The Thunderbirds trailed by eight points heading into the fourth quarter with the game still within reach, but Sherman outscored Chautauqua Lake 15-2 to punch a ticket to the championship game on Thursday.

Sherman’s effort was led by Elijah Kioko, who scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had four blocks. Treyvon Kopta added 5 points, hauled in nine rebounds and made five blocks; Gerald Carris scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds; and Brayden Hayes added 9 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Chautauqua Lake’s Brett Meadows had 12 points and six rebounds.

CARDS BREEZE TO WIN

RANDOLPH — Randolph raced to a 23-5 lead after the first quarter and rolled to a 66-36 nonleague victory over Ellicottville.

Braylon Wyatt had 12 points and Logan Grinols added 10 for the Eagles.
