ALDEN — Southwestern athletes swept a pair of throwing events while Silver Creek/Forestville’s Nathan Mays appears to be well on his way to a landslide victory in the pentathlon after the first day of action at the Section VI Track & Field State Qualifier on Friday at Alden High School.
The Trojans’ Tyler McIntyre won the boys Class C shot put at 50 feet, 6.5 inches while teammate Leo Kavic was second at 50 feet, 6.25 inches. Southwestern’s Jason Edwards was sixth (42-0) and teammate Calvin Salisbury was seventh (41-11).
In the girls Class C discus, Southwestern’s Mikayla Johnson won with a throw of 127 feet, 1 inch. Silver Creek/Forestville’s Ingrid Gibson was second (112-3), Frewsburg’s Brea Rubrecht was third (106-10) and Randolph’s Brooke Reding was sixth (101-7).
Mays finished Day 1 with a three-event total of 2,213 points in the pentathlon, 496 points better than second-place Reese McKay of Falconer/Cassadaga Valley. Mays turned in the top time in the 110-meter hurdles (15.78), led the entire field in the high jump at 1.88 meters and had the top shot put throw of 14.5 meters. McKay turned in a time of 17.18 in the 110-meter hurdles, reached 1.76 meters in the high jump and threw the shot put 10.53 meters.
In the girls pentathlon, Fredonia’s Elizabeth Saunders sits in 10th place with 1,262 points while Franklinville/Ellicottville’s Diana Li is 16th with 858 points. Saunders turned in a time of 19.04 and Li ran a 19.20 in the 100-meter hurdles; Saunders reached 1.45 meters in the high jump and Li reached 1.15 meters; and Saunders tossed the shot put 6.60 meters and Li tossed it 5.19 meters.

Maple Grove’s Ty Kraft edged teammate Ethan Verbosky for the boys Class C 800-meter title with a time of 1:57.09. Verbosky finished in 1:57.68. Randolph’s Nathan Zink was fifth (2:04.18) while Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Christopher Phelps and Zack Odell were sixth (2:04.20) and seventh (2:04.78), respectively.
Southwestern’s Tryniti Card won the girls Class C 800 meters with a time of 2:15.59. Silver Creek/Forestville’s Leah Mays was seventh (2:31.774) and Maple Grove’s Hayden Allen was eighth (2:31.778).
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Mary Lundmark won the girls Class C pole vault at 9 feet, 9 inches. Gowanda’s Alivia Richter was second at 8 feet and Frewsburg’s Kactus Brown was sixth at 8 feet.
Jamestown’s Clevon Wofford took second in the boys Class A 800 meters with a time of 1:56.91.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s Meredith Lendt took second in the girls Class C 3,000 meters with a time of 11:28.89 while Frewsburg’s Grace Gilevski was fifth (11:51.82), Maple Grove’s Lily Elliss was sixth (11:52.74) and Southwestern’s Lillian Weikel was eighth (12:09.19).

Jamestown’s Wyatt Olmstead finished third in the boys Class A 3,200 meters with a time of 10:01.82.
Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Talon Bramer took fifth in the girls Class C long jump at 15 feet, 9.5 inches.
Southwestern’s Xayvion Troutman took fifth in the boys Class C long jump at 19 feet, 10.75 inches while Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s Michael Horvath was sixth (19-7.50).
Fredonia’s Trenton Krenzer finished sixth in the boys Class C 3,200 meters with a time of 10:36.22.
Dunkirk’s Leona Crane took sixth in the girls Class B pole vault at 8 feet, 9 inches.

Jamestown’s Joseph Perry finished sixth in the boys Class A shot put at 40 feet, 2 inches.
Several preliminary races were also held Friday to set up today’s finals.
Fredonia’s Nathan Keefe will be seeded second (15.44) in the boys Class C 110-meter hurdles while Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Bransen Gabel will be seeded fourth (16.32).
Maple Grove’s Sydney Simmons will be seeded second (16.14) in the girls Class C 100-meter hurdles while Southwestern’s M’Kenzie Zavala will be seeded fourth (16.90), Franklinville/Ellicottville’s Eva Green will be seeded seventh (17.44) and Randolph’s Aiyanna Goldsmith will be seeded eighth (17.58).
Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Gavin Krasa will be seeded fourth (11.51) in the boys Class C 100-meter dash while Salamanca’s Xazavier Escobar will be seeded fifth (11.42) and Gowanda’s Damien Cedri will be seeded seventh (11.56).

Southwestern’s Marlana Cresanti will be seeded fourth (13.09) in the girls Class C 100-meter dash while Silver Creek/Forestville’s Chymerah Genovese will be seeded fifth (13.07).
Dunkirk’s Chianti Lopez will be seeded fifth (12.93) in the girls Class B 100-meter dash.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Kadence Swanson, Kenley Lincoln, Lundmark and Alyssa Howard will be seeded fourth (52.12), Silver Creek/Forestville’s Emily Bain, Genovese, Leah Mays and Shaw will be seeded sixth (52.41) and Southwestern’s Katie Bishop, Mikaela Luce, Mackenzi Swafford and Avery Johnson will be seeded eighth (53.18) in the girls Class C 400-meter relay.
