Celoron R&G to celebrate 100th anniversary

CELORON — The oldest skeet and trap club in Chautauqua County will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Sunday.

Highlighting the activities at the Celoron Rod & Gun will be skeet, trap, wobble, 5-stand and other shooting games; a chicken dinner and homemade sides; and decades worth of stories.

“It’s a good time to get together,” club president Tim Young said. “I hope (the founders) would be proud of what we’ve done.”

Building chairman Bonnie Whalen, a club member for 37 years, knows a thing or two about the organization, which was founded in 1926. In fact, her late husband, Brian, who was inducted into the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, and his father, Pat, owned Chautauqua Shooters Supply on East Second Street in Jamestown. Brian continuously operated it for nearly 45 years.

“That building was the second building built in the city,” Bonnie said proudly. ” … There’s a lot of history. We all have roots and no wings, I guess. I want to keep up Pat and Brian’s memories. I want everything to be as it should be. We work hard at it.”

To that end, photos of and awards belonging to Celoron Rod & Gun members — past and present — hang on the walls inside the building, which is located at 210 East Livingston Ave. They are just a reminder that the club’s excellence in the shooting sports has stood the test of time.

Sunday’s celebration, which begins at 10 a.m., is open to the public.

“Anyone who wants to come,” Young said, “come and have a good time.”

Noted Bonnie: “We had T-shirts made with our logo, and one member donated $1,000 and he wanted $500 to go for the tent and the other $500 to go for the food.

“As a board, we’ve become family. We look out for one another.”

They will get a chance to celebrate together tomorrow, too.

Starting at $3.50/week.
