Muckdogs Beat Jamestown In Final At-Bat

BATAVIA — Charlie Szykowny hit a game-winning single down the left field line as the Batavia Muckdogs salvaged a 7-6 win over the Jamestown Tarp Skunks in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Thursday at Dwyer Stadium.

Jamestown closer Matt Henson walked Brice Mortillaro and Christian Robinson to open the frame before Szykowny failed on two bunt attempts. Facing an 0-2 count, Szykowny slapped a single past a diving Danny Hosley at third base to drive in Mortillaro with the winning run.

The Muckdogs seemed to be in control after the eighth inning. With Batavia leading 3-2, Tarp Skunks relief pitcher Evan Harrison allowed a leadoff double to Szykowny. Michael Florides then bunted him to second before an intentional walk to Jerry Reinhart. Abner Benitez then pinch-hit for Blair Frederick and hit a 2-2 pitch to right field for a two-run triple to give the Muckdogs a three-run lead. Spencer Marcus followed with an RBI single.

The Tarp Skunks did not go quietly in the ninth. Danny Hosley, DiMaggio Cazares and Justin Bailey opened the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Kolbe Aven then hit the first pitch he saw for a two-run single to center field. Justin Bowers then walked to reload the bases with no outs and Anthony Badala grounded into a fielder’s choice to make it 6-5.

Chase Carlson then attempted to plate pinch-runner Cory Blackburn with a suicide-squeeze bunt, but Szykowny pounced off the mound, slid for the ball and flipped to the plate as Blackburn was tagged out for the second out. Down to his final strike, Haiden Hunt hit an RBI single to left field to plate pinch-runner Elijah Pascual with the tying run. Mark Tucker then grounded out to end the inning and set up the Muckdogs’ dramatic finish.

Batavia led 1-0 after the first inning as Reinhart led off with a single, then stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error.

Jamestown took its only lead with a two-run top of the fifth inning. Cazares led off with a single and Bailey bunted him to second before Aven hit an RBI single to left field. Aven then went to second on a wild pitch and Bowers walked ahead of Carlson’s two-out RBI single to right field.

The Muckdogs answered immediately in the bottom of the frame. Mitch Fleming led off with a double to left field and Christian Robinson eventually tied the game with a two-out RBI single to right field. Batavia took the lead for good on Szykowny’s RBI ground-rule double.

Julian Pichardo threw the first four innings for Batavia, striking out six while walking four. He allowed four hits and two runs. AJ Winger threw the final three innings.

Starter Ryan Bradarich struck out 10, walked one and allowed seven hits while giving up three runs in seven innings for Jamestown, which returns to action today with a 7 p.m. game against the Newark Pilots at Diethrick Park.

NOTES: Frewsburg graduate Aaron Hair got the final two outs of the eight inning for the Tarp Skunks.
