Hearings Bring To Mind John’s Gospel To The Reader’s Forum: The recent questioning of Judge Amy Coney Barrett by the Senate judiciary committee was quite interesting and revealing. Her answers to her Democratic inquisitors were polite, thoughtful and focused. However, I doubt that she satisfied any of her adversaries. The spectacle reminded me of a verse from the prologue to the gospel of John: “And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” Respectfully, Dr. James Dahlie, Lakewood

A New FDR Deal Is Needed

To The Reader’s Forum: Voices from the past are urgently needed for a new U.S. policy. When FDR took office in 1933 the U.S. faced an unprecedented economic crisis. If it had not been for FDR and his team of advisors who knows where our country would be today. One member of his Brains Trust was born in Sinclairville, NY. His name was Rexford Tugwell. Tugwell was instrumental in designing the agricultural policies and public works (i.e. infrastructure) for what became known as the New Deal. One of his most notable contributions was the belief in the “concert of interests.” ...

Celebrate Connections With Local Food

To The Reader’s Forum: While the “Back to School” season may look different this fall, one thing remains constant: Whether your child’s school day calls for lunch in the cafeteria or at your kitchen table, dairy farmers like me throughout New York are working to ensure children are nourished so they can grow, play, learn, and succeed. October is Farm to School Month, a time to celebrate the connections happening all over the country between children and local foods. As a dairy farmer, I’m proud of our longstanding commitment to student health and success — from classroom ...

To Win, GOP Needs To Find Different Voters

To The Reader’s Forum: There is more to the sixth anniversary of the passing (Oct. 18, 2014) of Buffalo’s former Republican State Comptroller Edward V. Regan. He was also a member of the Buffalo Common Council and served as Erie County Executive in the 1970s. It was a time when Republicans could successfully compete with Democrats in Buffalo and statewide including local races within both Erie and Niagara Counties for political office at all levels of government. Fast forward to today. Democrats currently hold all statewide offices. The last Republican Senator was Alfonse ...

The Presidential Debate Was Painful, Disgusting

To The Reader’s Forum: The Presidential Debate held on Sept. 29 was painful and disgusting. Donald Trump repeatedly interrupted Joe Biden trying to speak in his time slot. Several times Moderator Chris Wallace requested that Donald Trump let Joe Biden answer the question asked of him without interference; to no avail. In response to Trump speaking out-of-turn, Joe Biden said, “Will you shut up man?” Make no mistake, in this campaign Donald Trump has told us his plan for re-election. He wants to discourage people who might vote for the Biden-Harris ticket from going to the ...

Thank You To Our Area’s Good Samaritans

To The Reader’s Forum: On Aug. 10. I put my car in a ditch on Big Tree Road. I want to thank Buteras for the amazing service. It only took 20 minutes for them to arrive and pull me out! I want to thank the two gentlemen that stopped to check on me. One pulled in front of me while, at the same time, someone pulled in behind me. Thank you to the young man who stopped; a Wegman’s employee who was so concerned for me. Lastly, thanks so much to the woman who stopped and offered to let me sit in her vehicle to wait since it was such a hot day. I’m impressed with how many ...
