Gun Violence Requires A Federal Approach

To The Reader’s Forum: According to the national organization “Gun Violence Archive” there have been at least 2,182 mass shootings in America since 2013, or at least roughly .65 per day. Others may disagree whether that number constitutes “a fact of life these days”, but I feel that a mass shooting that averages at least every other day meets that definition. Meaningful gun control, in my opinion, would include actions that attempt to prevent mass shootings and other gun violence from occurring. A recent letter pointed out that New York state has made some progress on gun ...

Judgement Or Blessing? To The Reader’s Forum: Abortion is a very controversial, prominent topic lately. In the Old Testament God strongly condemned the practice of child-sacrifice by fire to a god named Molech He called it an “abomination” in Deuteronomy 12:31. We are still sacrificing children today; not to Molech, but for the god of self for the sake of convenience or the pursuit of many self-interests; not by fire, but by other torturous methods while the baby is within what is supposed to be the very safest spot for the most innocent. God gave women the greatest ...

Neighbors Should Give No Mow May A Chance To The Reader’s Forum: Weekends I help my old mom, on Walnut Street in Lakewood. This last weekend she was distressed to get an official note from the village regarding her lawn, more than 6 inches long — if not cut, penalties would ensue! Almost certainly this resulted from neighbors registering complaints. I am sorry they did not have the guts to come talk to us personally — I guess 99-year-old women are pretty scary. A good neighbor might have offered to cut it. We would have thankfully refused. We believe (gasp!) that ...

City Legislators Didn’t Represent Jamestown’s Interests Well Last Week

To The Reader’s Forum: The county legislators representing the City of Jamestown have again shown that they are either asleep at the switch, at best, or just don’t care about the people who sent them to Mayville. The County Legislature voted on Wednesday to change the formula for disability insurance without any input from the two cities and one village who will pay the bulk of the increase. Once again, the social club masquerading as elected public officials in Mayville changed a long-standing policy without discussing its ramifications with any municipalities, but ...

Borrello Plan Would Discourage New Voter Registrations In Too Many Communities

To The Reader’s Forum: NY57 Senator George Borrello’s failed “Voter Registration Integrity Act” proposal is part and parcel of the national Republican Party’s effort to bring distrust to our national, state and local county voting processes. It is truly unpatriotic to attack our system of voting that works. If you believe former President Trump won the 2020 election, Senator Borrello’s bill is somehow speaking to you. The defeated proposal (S.1853) would have required first-time voter registration applications to include official proof from the applying voter ...
