New York Can, And Should, Do Better

After the 2020 census, New York redrew its congressional-district lines in time for the 2022 elections. Did you think that was the end of the process? If you did, you might be right. Or you might be wrong. Before the state Court of Appeals—which in New York is the state’s highest court—are a host of issues, including this: Are the lines that the court approved for the 2022 elections also for the 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections? Or were they only for the 2022 elections? This is one of those actions in which one just senses that the issues really do have right answers, ...

My Tribute To The Cockaigne Ski Resort

To The Reader’s Forum: Cockaigne Ski Resort’s closure hit me hard. I started my ski journey eons ago, when Southwestern High School offered an alternative to winter gym classes (that consisted of indoor soccer, volleyball and dancing): skiing! The hill over the football field was set up for us, and an after-school, learn-to ski-program offered by Westfield’s Eagle Ridge Ski Resort provided more instruction and practice. Cockaigne opened the year I graduated and was our favorite place to ski, and, for some of us, to work. College and then the Marine Corps sent me to the West ...

Threatening To Shut Down Government Are Breaking Oath To Uphold The Constitution

To The Reader’s Forum: We have the right of freedom of speech in order to persuade each other, to learn from each other, and to hold elected leaders accountable. We have a republic in which our elected legislature votes to pass laws, and it is assumed that the majority of votes wins. Our constitution does not state that the majority of votes wins, but it does say that if the vote is tied, then the chair votes to break the tie (“The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.” Article 1, Section ...

The Messages Sent By Attacks On Israel

To The Reader’s Forum: What do the events in Israel say to America loud and clear? Our border is not secure - a wall needs to be completed now. More workers need to be placed at the border in the meantime. How many terrorists have come into our country since President Biden took office? What can we do to find them and deport them? First of all Christians need to return to God and pray - 2 Chronicles 7:14- “If my people (Christians), which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from ...

A Little Less ‘They’ Would Go A Long Way

To The Reader’s Forum: Those in attendance at the recent Town Hall Meeting in Gerry hosted by Senator Borrello appreciated the time he spent answering questions. Asked about the divisiveness in government, the Senator stated he works “across the aisle” to reach compromises on various issues. This is important, appreciated and we hope it continues with all local, state and federal government officials. Many of us would like to see more effort put into ensuring the speech patterns and words used during presentations and in written communications also work towards eliminating ...

‘School Of Rock’ Is An Enjoyable Performance

To The Reader’s Forum: I recently attended the Jamestown Little Theater production of School of Rock the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and ably directed by Marie Karbacka. What a treat!! The singing was impressive with great intonation and diction, backed by a very fine orchestra conducted by Sai Ceng of Jamestown Public Schools. The “glue” in this show was the lead Andrew Garvey (Dewey Finn) – never a dull moment. The cast was well coordinated with plenty of energy. Don’t miss the fun family show playing again this weekend at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 ...
