Frewsburg students attend Boys State

The Samuel Derby Post 556 and the Sons of the American Legion selected Frewsburg Central School students Landon Frederes, Gavin Kent, Aiden Cusimano and Mathias Sanfilippo to attend Boys’ State of New York at the State University at Morrisville.

Landon Frederes is the son of Kelly and Tiffany Frederes. Landon is a swimmer for the school’s varsity team and a USA Swimming club team member. He was a key contributor as his high school team won the state team championship as a member of two relay teams that placed first at the state championship during his sophomore year. Recently, Landon was among a select group of swimmers invited to compete in the Northeast Regional Speedo Sectionals. In school, he serves as Student Council vice president, Junior Class treasurer, and a member of Quiz Bowl. Additionally, he is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as the school’s Regents Review chairperson. After high school, Landon plans to swim in college while pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.

Gavin Kent is the son of Mark and Melissa Kent. Gavin is involved in athletics, competing in varsity soccer as well as varsity indoor and outdoor track. He serves as Junior Class co-president, Student Council delegate, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Envirothon, and Students for Equality. He was also selected to attend the HOBY Youth Leadership Seminar and was chosen by his teachers as the JCC College Connections Student of the Year. After graduation, Gavin plans to attend college and pursue a degree in engineering.

Aiden Cusimano is the son of Jeff Cusimano and Angela Sutton. Aiden is also a three-sport athlete, participating in varsity football, basketball, and baseball. He holds the positions of Junior Class co-president and Student Council delegate. Aiden is an active junior fireman with the Frewsburg Fire Department and attends Youngsville Free Methodist Church. After high school, he plans to attend college and pursue a nursing degree.

Mathias Sanfilippo is the son of Joe Sanfilippo and Wendy Johnson. Mathias is involved in varsity athletics and a variety of school activities. He is a member of the varsity soccer and tennis teams. Additional activities include the school musical, Quiz Bowl, Mock Trial, and Envirothon. Mathias also auditioned for and earned a role in the Little Theater production of Footloose.

Boys’ State of New York is a six-day program sponsored by the American Legion. Candidates selected to attend Boys’ State must be above-average students who demonstrate good citizenship and possess strong leadership skills. The objective of Boys’ State is to develop civic leadership and promote American citizenship. Attendees participate in a detailed study of government and its functions.
