On Oct. 12, the Mozart Club enjoyed a program of “Scottish Fiddle meets Hardanger Fiddle” presented by Sue Tillotson and Jim Cunningham.
Tillotson played various tunes on a beautiful Hardanger fiddle. The Hardanger fiddle first appeared in Norway in 1652 and was at that time though to be “the Devil’s fiddle” since it was used to accompany dancing.
The program continued on a Scottish fiddle as Tillotson was accompanied by Cunningham on a dreadnaught guitar — a large guitar with a big sound and a powerful low end. The pair played a Highlander march, a Highlander sword dance tune and a Lament for King George V with overtones of bagpipes heard in the music.
Tillotson has a degree in music from Baldwin Wallace College. She has played in a classical trio and has also been teaching the Suzuki method to children for 40 years. Cunningham plays on the guitar, bouzouki cittern and Celtic harp.
The two have played music together for many years.
The next meeting of the Mozart Club will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Christ First United Church, 663 Lakeview Ave., Jamestown.
