Backpacking Adventures Among Audubon Summer Day Camps with Openings
Building a fire in the woods is part of the Backpacking Adventurers camp for 12-14 year olds at the Audubon Community Nature Center. It is one of the organization’s summer day camps that still has some openings.
Summer day camps in the forests, fields and ponds of Audubon Community Nature Center’s 600-acre property and other regional natural areas offer opportunities for children to have outdoor adventures.
More than a quarter of the two dozen camps are already full, but there are still openings for ages four to 17 this summer.
While most camps are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, a few openings remain for the distinctive Backpacking Adventure for 12- to 14-year-olds in seventh through ninth grades. The three-part camp starts with a training session on July 3, 5 and 6, continues with a single long day-hike off-site on Monday, July 16, and culminates with a three-day, two-night backpacking trip Tuesday through Thursday, July 24-26. Campers may provide their own gear or borrow from Audubon’s gear locker, and Audubon supplies the food. Support from Allegheny Outfitters, Kiwanis Club of Warren, and Lakewood Rod and Gun allow for a reduction from the usual price.
Among the camps that still have openings are Nature’s Playground, July 24-27, for first and second graders, ages 6-7; Far Afield, August 7-10, for fifth and sixth graders, ages 10-12; and Sunshine and Shadows, August 14-17, for third through fifth graders between the ages of 8 and 10.
Imagine a World, August 14-17, is for five to seven year olds in kindergarten through second grades and allows kindergarteners to spend all day at Audubon playing with older students who serve as role models.
