North Harmony UMC Creates Accessible Ministry
SHERMAN – The North Harmony United Methodist Church, 6814 Stedman-Sherman Road, Sherman, believes nothing should separate the church from in-person Christian worship as part of a church community and has eliminated a number of barriers toward this end.
With resources provided by the late Clyde Swezey, the North Harmony United Methodist Church has made major modifications to its building to make it more accessible. Persons with mobility issues can park in paved, designated parking spaces and enter both levels of the church without negotiating any steps. There is a fully accessible rest room near the entrance and a new lift will take persons from the entry level, where fellowship hall is, to the sanctuary level.
To address other needs, the church has special audio equipment for the hearing impaired and large print bulletins and hymnals.
North Harmony United Methodist Church officials said they seek to remove barriers to the mind and spirit as well, with worship services and Christian education classes that are traditional, but innovative and concerned with every day life. The hymns, scriptures, prayers, meditations and sacraments are intended to help bring one closer to Christ at all times and in all situations.
The church will celebrate the initiation of a more accessible ministry at a special service on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will follow. For more information, call 789-4340.
