Watershed Conservancy To Offer Rain Barrel Workshop
On Friday at 3:30 p.m., the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy will be offering a workshop on rain barrels. The workshop will include instruction on how to set up, install, and maintain a rain barrel. Installing a rain barrel on a property can help save resources, savemoney, and help protect the watershed. Rain barrels connect directly to a home’s gutter or downspout to capture and store rainwater that falls on rooftops. The collected water can then be used for things like watering gardens and lawns. Collecting and storing rainwater will also help reduce the volume of storm water runoff coming from hard surfaces on properties, like rooftops and driveways, which in turn will help control flooding and moderate stream erosion. As the stored rainwater is used in and around gardens and lawns, the water will absorb slowly into the ground rather than run off and help to replenish groundwater supplies. Collecting rainwater in rain barrels can also help stop water from pooling around house foundations and help keep basements dry. The workshop is free and open to the public and will be held at the CWC office at 71 E. Fairmount Ave., Lakewood. Reservations are requested and can be sent to Bethany O’Hagan, CWC land specialist, who will lead the workshop, at bethany@chautauquawatershed.org.
