James L. Hannon

James L. Hannon, 88, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at his home in Lakewood. A Jamestown native, he was born April 1, 1938, the son of the late Leo and Helen Stuart Hannon, and was a 1956 graduate of Jamestown High School. Drafted by the US Army, he served from Nov. 1961 until Nov. 1963.

Jim was employed for 43 years by MRC which became TRW and later SKF, retiring in 1999. During these years, he always found his work interesting and he made many friends. He was active in SKF Union retiree meetings. A proud veteran, he was a 47 year member of American Legion Post 149, having served as treasurer and membership coordinator, as well as Sugar Grove Post 50 where he was adjutant and treasurer for many years.

Jim, also known as Hambone to those who knew him best, played Bigger Little League baseball in his youth and as an adult played baseball and fast pitch softball. He mostly played short stop and second base for teams such as MRC, Stravato’s, WarVets and Warren Beverage. He and a long list of good friends played in many tournaments in New York and Pennsylvania. Still friends today with Ron Hallberg, The Woodfield’s, Steve Pachol & many more.

A lover of the outdoors, Jim enjoyed pheasant hunting trips to Nebraska and moose hunting trips to Canada. For 50 years Jim was a part of trap and skeet shooting groups from Busti, Sugar Grove and the AMVETS Post 50 with friends Denny LaBarte, Gary Hale & Brill Morris.

In retirement Jim spent many pleasant times at Burger King with fellow retirees from SKF and at Ecklof’s Bakery with old softball friends.

Jim married Oleta Wickmark Brown on October 21, 1966, at which time he became stepfather to Ronald J. (Mary Jane) Brown, Randall A. (Janice) Brown and the late Diana Lyn Brown. He is also survived by grandchildren: Ryan Bell, Aryn (Patrick) Monaghan, Tyler Brown, Daniel (Corey) Brown, and Lindsey Vitello; and great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Macey and Abby Monaghan, Deryck and Dominyck Brown, Julian and Gabriel Vitello, and Reese, Avery Brown; sister Linda Kratzert, Niece Lynn, Nephew David, sister-in-law Phyllis Hannon and nephew Tom Hannon. He was preceded in death by brother David, brother-in-law Bruce Kratzert, niece Laurie Krazert and nephew Jim Hannon.

The family will have a Time of Celebration for Jim from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday July 8th, 2026 at the Fluvanna American Legion Post 149.
