The Need Of Bike Lanes And Public Art

To The Reader’s Forum: The shortsightedness of city and county governments is evident again in the denial of plans for bike lanes and public art—both measures that could improve the quality of life and economies of the city and region. The County Legislature recently let a proposal to add murals and giant chairs to the area’s public art offerings die on the vine. This work would have been funded from the county’s 3% occupancy tax reserve, money which can only be used for tourism-related projects of this sort. Meanwhile, the Jamestown City Council rejected a plan to add ...

Trump Is Unfit To Serve As President

To The Reader’s Forum: This is February 2024, but before you know it November 2024 will be here, and election season will be upon us. No doubt, 2024 is a strange year as far as the presidential election is concerned. While we don’t know for sure who the major party candidates will be, the front runners, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, are “old” and only 3 years apart. In other words, what’s age got to do with it? There are many factors in Biden’s favor! The biggest is that Biden is unindicted - as opposed to 91 charges in 2 federal and 2 state indictments for Trump. I ...

Time To Face The Truth

To The Reader’s Forum: It is time to face the truth. AMERICA IS DOOMED. Why the fear and foreboding over the coming apocalypse? Why the dread and alarm that the Constitution of the United States will soon be ripped from its inert glass enclosure and consigned to the bonfire of history? In the fifties, my generation was told we must fear the awesome might of the Russian military. Given the demonstrated ineptitude of the Russian army in Ukraine, I no longer fear the Russians. In the nineties and ought’s’, we were told to fear the awesome might and power of the growing Chinese ...

Creative Solutions Needed For Shelters

To The Reader’s Forum: I recently suggested that local schools could be opened for warming centers or temporary shelter during severe weather and loss of power and thus Loss of heat in peoples’ homes. The elderly, children and chronically ill people are at risk during these times and need some place to be warm but do not have emergency generators nor alternate sources for heat. Some may not have family nearby or any other family at all. Some may not be able to leave and get to libraries or other places during the day because they do not have transportation or they can not use their ...

Has A New Code Blue Shelter Location Revealed Itself?

To The Reader’s Forum: They say that 'timing is everything'. This couldn't be more true during this past week. Current Post-Journal articles highlighting the need for “Code Blue” shelters and the county's transitional housing program's failures in Falconer/Jamestown prove an overwhelming need for temporary housing in the south county area. In the same week, Lutheran announced that it is closing their 148 bed long term care facilities. Viola', an instant solution to a county wide problem! Perhaps Lutheran could step up and help with their empty beds! No more paying various ...

New York Can, And Should, Do Better

After the 2020 census, New York redrew its congressional-district lines in time for the 2022 elections. Did you think that was the end of the process? If you did, you might be right. Or you might be wrong. Before the state Court of Appeals—which in New York is the state’s highest court—are a host of issues, including this: Are the lines that the court approved for the 2022 elections also for the 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections? Or were they only for the 2022 elections? This is one of those actions in which one just senses that the issues really do have right answers, ...
