Timeout Jump-Starts Jamestown To Victory

For a little more than two minutes to start the second half of Saturday afternoon’s Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game, Jamestown appeared to be on its collective heels.

Clarence was on a 10-2 run.

An eight-point Red Raiders’ lead had evaporated.

And the game was tied 27-all, forcing Jamestown coach Billy Miley to call a timeout.

“You always hope your team responds,” he said.

To say it did would be an understatement.

The Red Raiders finished the third quarter on an 18-4 run, led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 62-50 win over the Red Devils at McElrath Gymnasium. The win improved Jamestown to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the division, while Clarence fell to 7-4 and 0-2.

The difference in this one was truly a team effort.

The Red Raiders’ guard trio of junior Jaydian Johnson, sophomore Dom Gonzalez and senior Greg Brumagin combined for 47 points. In tandem with 14 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks from senior Bishop Butts and sophomore Elijah Farmer, it proved to be too much for Clarence.

Initially, the Red Devils gave the hosts fits with their 2-3 zone, but after that early third-quarter timeout, Jamestown began hitting on all cylinders.

During a three-minute span, Johnson drilled a 3-pointer, another jumper and a pair of free throws; Butts completed a three-point play; Gonazalez nailed a pair of treys; and Farmer converted on a drive to the basket.

Clarence’s Bryce Tubin stopped the run with a bucket with just over 30 seconds left in the period, but the damage had been done.

Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, Gonzalez added 14 — 12 in the second half; and Brumagin finished with 9, courtesy of three 3-pointers. Butts scored 7 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked six shots; and Farmer tallied 7 points and was credited with seven boards.

“(Johnson’s) the guy who has to run the show for us, he has to score for us, be the voice on defense and he’s done a pretty good job of that,” Miley said. “It’s nice for him that we have some other guys that can make some shots, and he’s able to create for himself and others as well.”

Equally impressive was the 5-foot-7 Gonzalez, who sat out most of the first half after picking up his second foul.

“He’s exactly what you want as a coach,” Miley said. ” … He played jayvees as a seventh-grader, and the last couple years he has really evolved his offensive game. He can knock down threes, go by guys and finish at the rim even at his size, and still help other guys out. He’s really come along offensively, and he certainly has a bright future.”

For the Red Devils, Tubin had 12 points, Sean Gilmartin and Brett Erbacher both had 9, and Ryan Ameis added 8.

The Red Raiders return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Frontier (7-0, 1-0), the first of three consecutive road games.

“It’s always tough to go on the road,” Miley said, “but when you have guys who like the challenges and like to be able to go in someone else’s place and play well. … Fortunately, we’ve done a pretty good job of that lately.”

NOTES: Interestingly enough, Gonzalez, the smallest player on the court, was credited with three of the team’s 10 blocked shots. … The Character Athletes of the Game were Brumagin for Jamestown and Cole Brinkerhoff of Clarence. … In the junior varsity game, Clarence prevailed 49-44. Leading the way for the Red Raiders (6-2) was Hunter Johnson with 24 points.
