Eagles’ Tying Run Cut Down At Plate

NORTH COLLINS — Portville threw out a runner at home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 3-2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 3 baseball victory Saturday evening.

The Eagles’ Scott Armbruster reached on a dropped third strike to open the seventh inning and stole second before taking third on a wild pitch. On a deep popup behind second base, Armbruster attempted to score from third base, but was thrown out by the Panthers’ Cole Keesler. A groundout ended the game.

Luke Petryszak picked up the win for Portville, throwing the first six innings with 11 strikeouts while allowing four hits, two walks and two unearned runs. Hayden Emley earned the save with one strikeout in relief.

Derek Ebersole took the complete-game loss for North Collins, striking out 10 while allowing six hits and four walks.

Keesler had two hits, including a double, and Brady German also doubled for the Panthers (8-0, 7-0). Derek Ebersole, Walter Ebersole, Zach Quiter and Carson Teijeira each singled for the Eagles (8-1, 7-1).

DUNKIRK PUTS

TOGETHER BIG INNING

ALLEGANY — Dunkirk scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to put away an 8-1 Division 1 victory over Allegany-Limestone on Saturday.

Greg Orcutt reached to open the sixth inning and stole second before pinch-runner Bradon Gustafson went to third on an Anthony Piede single. Gustafson eventually scored on a passed ball and Piede scored to make it 4-0 when Dylan Bankoski reached on an error. Bankoski later scored on a passed ball and Jonathan Ganey singled. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Donnie Jackson reached on an error to score Ganey and Paul Trippy III scored on a bases-loaded walk. Josh Lemanski scored the final run when Piede was hit by a pitch.

Thomas Shaffer pitched five innings of two-hit shutout ball with two strikeouts and a walk. Bankoski threw the final two innings and struck out five.

“Thomas Shaffer had a great start for us throwing strikes and our defense played very good behind him,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “Imagine that; pitching and defense, and then our bats came alive.”

Six players had singles for the Marauders (6-5, 4-3).

AJ Riordan and Zane Gleason each had a pair of hits for the Gators (4-6, 0-5).
