SANBORN — How does a repeat sound?

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer claimed the Section VI Division II wrestling dual meet championship for the second year in a row, downing Southwestern 42-19 in the final on Saturday at Niagara County Community College.

By virtue of the victory, the Eagles advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championships on Jan. 27 at SRC Arena and Events Center in Syracuse.

The Eagles fell into a 9-0 hole after the first two matches — the Trojans’ Kenji Walters (124 pounds) and Carmine Calimeri (131) posted wins by major decision and technical fall, respectively — but then ran off six straight victories.

Those prevailing for CL/W/P/C were Jordin Eddy (138), Toby Watson and John Watson (160) via pin; Jordan Joslyn (152) via forfeit; and Colton Hamilton (170) and Jayden Malecki (190) via decision.

The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association rivals alternated wins in the final five weight classes, all by decision. The winners for the Eagles were Walter Lukasiak (285) and Gavin Burchanowski (108). Claiming victories for the Trojans were Tavio Hoose (215), Adrian Torres (101) and Miles Torres (116).

Local programs have done well in the Section VI Wrestling Duals since their inception. After Pioneer won the section’s first Division II crown in 2016-17, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley won the next three titles, including a state championship in 2019-20. The 2020-21 team championship was canceled due to COVID-19, Newfane captured the 2021-22 crown and CL/W/P/C won it last season.

Now the Eagles have one more title to add to the program resume.

Newfane finished in third place on Saturday following a 37-29 victory over Gowanda.

The Panthers’ effort was led by pins from Michael Horth (170), Brody Mescall (190) and Jayden John (215).
