FREWSBURG — Garrett Brink was dominant on Friday afternoon.
Needing just 64 pitches to do so, the Frewsburg junior threw a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Bears beat Pine Valley 11-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball action at the Frewsburg Sports Complex.
The Bears (4-2, 2-0) led 2-0 early before exploding for nine runs over their final two times at bat.
With the way Brink was pitching, those runs wouldn’t be necessary.
The right-hander struck out the first two batters he faced before getting a fly out to center field to end the first inning. In the second, Brink struck out the Panthers (2-2, 0-2) clean-up hitter before back-to-back pop-ups to the mound.

“All of the pitchers have been working hard all season,” Frewsburg head coach Eric Haglund said.
After a strikeout and an groundout in front of home plate to open the third inning, Pine Valley got its first base runner when Jon Sheldon hit a grounder just under the glove of Frewsburg’s shortstop for an error.
“It’s tough to get the bats going, but we’ve had a couple of games this week,” Pine Valley head coach Chris Buczek said. “I just think they were having trouble picking it up.”
Darwin Westlund then reached on a throwing error before Brink got out of his only jam of the game with a comebacker.
“The opposing team was pretty loud and he took that as energy,” Haglund said. “He threw the ball even harder and commanded his pitches today.”
Brink induced a pair of groundouts around a strikeout in the fourth inning, then struck out the side in the top of the fifth to end the game.
“That was total command by Garrett,” Haglund said. “He did a great job.”
Payton Dustin and Maddox Sheesley walked to open the Frewsburg third inning before they executed a double steal. Daniel Peterson then laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt to plate Dustin and Sheesley scored on a double steal. After Harrison Eckert was hit by a pitch, Trent Lewis hit a long, two-run triple to left field. Draven DeJesus plated the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
“I started him in right field today as a freshman. It was a beautiful hit to left field, it’s super exciting for him,” Haglund said of Lewis’ drive. “He’s a great ball player with a good future.”
In the Bears’ fifth, Mason Eckman walked and scored on a wild pitch, Dustin walked and scored on Sheesley’s RBI double and Vincent Sanfilippo walked before Aidan Gruber’s two-run pinch-hit single.
“All of the errors that we made were demoralizing, not necessarily one play,” Buczek said. “Everything that went wrong and the mistakes that we made weighed on each other.”
For the game, Frewsburg stole 11 bases, including four in the first inning to set up the Bears’ first two runs.
“The bats were a little bit slow at the time,” Haglund said. “We got on base and used our aggressive baserunning, all of the knowledge we’ve had working hard on the bases, and created something out of nothing.”
Frewsburg will return to action Monday with another league game at Brocton, while Pine Valley will travel to league foe Westfield that same afternoon.
NOTES: Dustin walked three times and scored three runs while Sheesley walked twice and scored three runs. … Trent Ivett allowed just two hits, but walked nine while striking out five for Pine Valley.
