ROCHESTER — The Southwestern sailing team got out on the water for the first time this spring season to participate in the Fleet Qualifier at the Rochester Yacht Club.

Weather has been a big hindrance this year but despite everything, Southwestern’s sailors took advantage of every available practice they could as soon as the floating dock returned to Lakewood Beach.

Saturday was sunny with some of the warmer temperatures the sailors have experienced this spring. Predominant winds and gusts as well as a strong river current created conditions that favored the left side of the Genesee River throughout the day.

Southwestern’s qualifying teams were comprised of Jack Ballard, Jack Colburn, Ashley Solarz and Aiden Solarz. A total of 16 races were completed before 2 p.m. with the best finish being first place in the third race. Southwestern finished third overall with a total of 52 points; 23 in A Division and 29 in B Division.

“It’s exciting to get back on the water this year,” Coach Hunter Farris said. “We had a great day with lots of competition and were able to pinpoint areas that need improvement going forward. ”

The team will be defending its home territory on Chautauqua Lake this coming weekend with CLCSF hosting the JV Regatta on Sunday. The boats will be on the water just off Lakewood Beach.
