Connor Grey reached another milestone Monday afternoon.

Grey threw two innings for the New York Mets in a 12-7 Spring Training loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida.

The 2012 Frewsburg Central School graduate allowed two earned runs on three hits, including a home run, while striking out one.

Grey entered with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and allowed a bad-hop single to St. Louis catcher Ivan Herrera.

Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn, Baseball America’s No. 48 prospect this winter, then grounded into a force out up the middle, but beat out the potential double play.

Winn’s speed beating out the ground ball would prove costly as St. Louis third baseman Brendan Donovan, who finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting a season ago, hit a curveball 398 feet for a two-run home run.

The Cardinals’ Lars Nootbaar followed with a pop out to third base before reigning National League Most Valuable Player Paul Goldschmidt singled through the left side of the infield.

Grey got Nolan Gorman to fly out to left field to end the inning.

The 2016 St. Bonaventure graduate’s second inning of work went much better. First, he induced a Paul DeJong fly ball to left field before Dylan Carlson lined out. Grey’s afternoon came to an end with a strikeout of Moises Gomez.

All told, Grey threw 21 of 31 pitches for strikes.

Grey was a 20th-round pick, 599th overall, by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2016 first-year player draft. Multiple times, Grey was in the Major League bullpen for Arizona during Spring Training, but he never got into a game. He was released by the Diamondbacks in 2020 and signed with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association of Professional Baseball in 2021. In the middle of that summer, Grey was picked up by the Mets and pitched throughout New York’s minor league system the past two years.

Last August, Grey was called up to the majors while the Mets were playing the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. While Grey warmed up in the bullpen during one of his games on the active roster, he never made his Major League debut.

He elected for free agency when his rookie contract expired in November. Grey decided to sign a minor league contract with the Mets on Jan. 11, and will likely begin the season in Triple-A with the Syracuse Mets.

In six minor league seasons, Grey has pitched in 121 games, including 90 starts. He has a 34-28 career record with a 4.44 earned run average. In 527 innings, he has 474 strikeouts and has held opposing hitters to a .265 average.

The highlight of his minor league career came in September of 2017 when he threw a perfect game for the Kane County Cougars.

That milestone will not end up being the highlight of his professional career if he’s able to make his Major League regular-season debut.
