SYRACUSE — Heading into Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championships, it appeared Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s pool-play matchup with defending champion Tioga might end up deciding the Division II state title.

That’s exactly how it played out.

In a match that came down to the final weight class, Section IV’s Tigers beat the Thunderbirds 33-24 to eliminate the Section VI champions from the tournament.

From there, Tioga beat Gouverneur 55-15 and Central Valley 49-18 to claim its second straight Division II state crown.

It was nearly Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer in that position.

The Thunderbirds entered the final weight class, 132 pounds, trailing Tioga 29-24. Senior Martin Ohlsson, who entered the match with a 33-3 record on the season, had his work cut out for him with the Tigers sending junior Gianni Silvestri (32-1) to the mat. Ohlsson needed a pin to win or a technical fall to tie, but Silvestri walked away with an 11-2 major decision sending Tioga into the semifinals and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer home.

Trent Burchanowski opened the matchup with Tioga with a 5-3 decision at 138 pounds, but the Tigers quickly took the lead at 145 pounds with Tyler Roe’s 12-3 major decision. That started a string of 16 straight points for Tioga.

Mason Maring got the Thunderbirds back on the scoreboard with a 6-3 decision at 189 pounds before Ison Shirley (215 pounds) and Gavin Segovia (285 pounds) picked up pins for Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer to take an 18-16 lead.

Logan Bellis then earned a major decision at 102 pounds and Brayden MacWhinnie picked up a decision at 110 pounds to give the Tigers a 23-18 lead. The Thunderbirds already knew they would be giving up 6 points at 118 pounds via forfeit, but Jordan Joslyn kept them alive at 126 pounds with a pin setting up Ohlsson’s win-or-go-home 132-pound bout.

After a first-round bye, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer beat Cobleskill-Richmondville 49-18 in the second round.

Ohlsson, Jack Bourgeois, John Watson, Jayden Malecki, Maring, Shirley and Segovia wrestled their way to wins for the Thunderbirds. Gavin Burchanowski and Thandon Bensink also won via forfeit.

Starpoint went 2-0 in its pool with victories over Cicero-North Syracuse (54-16) and Fairport (36-35), then beat Wantagh 36-26 in the semifinals before capturing the Division I state title with a 35-27 victory over Minisink Valley.

In other results among area grapplers, Konner Spring of Salamanca (126 pounds) and Ryan Carpenter of Randolph (285 pounds) finished third; and Cole Bloomquist of Jamestown (132 pounds) and Domanik Clark of Randolph (138 pounds) placed fourth.
