SILVER CREEK — The Randolph Cardinals put on a 3-and-D clinic Friday night as they rolled to a 59-29 victory over Silver Creek in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East game Friday night at Silver Creek High School.
Silver Creek (10-4, 5-2) was forced to play one of the biggest games of its regular season without star forward Ray Cortes, who is out with an injury.
“This is one of the tougher places for us to come over and get a win,” Randolph head coach Kevin Hind said. “Ray Cortes or not, if you can come over here, get a win and get out the door, you’re happy with that.”
Early on, Randolph (12-3, 8-0) got all it could handle from Silver Creek. The Black Knights held a 6-3 lead after a 3-pointer from Shawn Kelly. Randolph claimed its first lead of the game when Carson Conley hit a 3-pointer near the halfway point of the first quarter, and the Cardinals led the rest of the way.
The first five buckets of the game all came from beyond the arc, but for Randolph, they just kept coming. The Cardinals tallied 11 made 3-pointers on the night.
“We put four or five guys on the court that can shoot it at all times, so it’s just a matter of finding the hot hand,” Kevin Hind said.
For Silver Creek, after a very competitive first quarter that Randolph snuck out of with a 12-10 advantage, the shots just stopped falling.
“We held the team to 10 points — granted it was without their best player, and that changes everything — but if you hold anybody to 10, eventually we’re going to hit some shots,” Kevin Hind said.
Silver Creek was held scoreless for the entire second quarter and nearly the first half of the third quarter. In all, the Black Knights did not score a basket on the smothering Randolph defense for over 12 minutes of game action, while Randolph scored all 6 points in the second quarter and the first 16 points of the second quarter.
“You can’t have those lulls,” said Silver Creek head coach Ralph Jackson. “Randolph is a good team, they play good defense. We didn’t score, but they didn’t score much either. If you play a team like Randolph, if you hold them to 6 points in a quarter, you’ve got to put some points up.”
After not scoring in the first quarter, Drew Hind got hot in a hurry for the Cardinals. He finished with 21 points, including 16 in the second half, with four 3-pointers on the night.
“I took him out a couple times just trying to get his head right,” Kevin Hind said. “(Then) he kind of locked in and was good for us.”
Carson Conley also had 18 points for Randolph, including five 3-pointers. Jaiden Huntington had 7 points, good for third on the team on Friday. Griffin Nelson had seven steals to go with 6 points, while Owen Nelson had seven assists to go with 3 points.
“In the first half, I thought we were moving well with some good contests on 3s. As the game wore on, they got some looks and they were making them,” Jackson said.
Silver Creek was led by Matt Woleben and Aidan Jamison, each with 11 points on the night. The rest of the Black Knights combined for 7 points in the absence of Cortes.
“He’s worth 30,” Kevin Hind said of Cortes. “They go through him, so it’s not just about the amount of points that he gets, it’s everything he does. They built their team around him. There’s a really good chance we could see them again down the road, and it will definitely be a different basketball game.”
“Obviously, Ray is going to help,” Jackson acknowledged. “There’s a good chance we see them again.”
Up next, the Black Knights play at Frewsburg on Monday. The Cardinals host Falconer that same night.
